With fonts you can make your document or website stand out and show your creativity and style. So why limit yourself to the fonts that are installed by default on your computer? Make your work stand out by downloading and installing fonts that suit you and your work. Below you can read how to do that.
Method 1 of 3: Installing fonts in Windows 7 and 8
Step 1. Look up fonts
There are several websites where you can buy or download fonts for free. On many sites, you can find free open source fonts that don't require you to register or download additional software. Some of the most popular font websites are Dafont, Google Fonts, Font Squirrel, 1001 Fonts, and fonts.com.
Step 2. Download the font of your choice
Make sure to download the file from a reliable and safe website. Font files are often infected with viruses. Most fonts can be downloaded as a ZIP file. Save the file to your computer in a location you can easily find, such as your desktop.
Step 3. Extract the ZIP file
The ZIP file should contain a single font file that you can install on your computer. Well-known file formats include.ttf,.ttc, and.otf.
Step 4. Go to the C folder:
\Windows\Fonts. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the "Fonts" folder in the "Windows" folder on your hard drive. You should now see a list of files for all the fonts already installed on your computer.
Step 5. Drag the new font file to the "Fonts" folder
If you drag a font file into the "Fonts" folder, Windows will install the font automatically. You can use the font right away the next time you choose a new font in a program.
- You can also install new fonts by double clicking the font file. The installation wizard for new fonts will then start automatically.
Method 2 of 3: Install fonts in Windows XP and Vista
Step 1. Look up a font file on the internet that is suitable for your version of Windows
Scan and check the file to make sure you are not downloading a harmful virus onto your computer. Make sure to download the file from a reputable website with multiple user reviews.
Step 2. Click the "Download" button to download the file and save it to your computer
Font files are often ZIP files, which you still need to extract after downloading. You can easily do this by double-clicking the ZIP file and then dragging the font file to another location on your computer, such as your desktop.
Step 3. Open Control Panel
Click the "Start" button and then click the Control Panel. With this menu you can adjust the settings of your computer.
Step 4. Go to the Fonts menu
Click "Appearance and Themes" in Control Panel and then click "Fonts."
Step 5. Click on "File"
If the "File" menu is not visible, press the Alt key to display the menu. Click "Install New Font" in the drop-down menu. A dialog box will now appear that will guide you through the installation process.
Step 6. Choose the location of the font file you just downloaded
If this was a ZIP file, make sure it is extracted. Otherwise you won't see the file listed.
Step 7. Click "Install" after selecting the correct file
Follow the instructions of the installation wizard. The next time you open a program, you should be able to use the font right away.
If you cannot use the new font, please restart your computer
