Screenshots can be very helpful, and on most devices you can take one with a simple keyboard shortcut. You can use screenshots to solve problems, give instructions, reference something, or show something. The method for taking a screenshot depends on the device you are using.

Method 1 of 10: Windows

If you're using a Surface or Windows tablet, go to the section Windows Mobile.

Save a Screenshot Step 1

Step 1. Take a picture of the whole screen by pressing

⎙ PrtScr.

You may need to press Fn first to activate the ⎙ PrtScr button. This way you copy what you see on your screen to the clipboard. You then have to paste the image somewhere, such as in Paint or Word. If you pasted the image into another program, you can save the file to keep the screenshot. You won't get a notification that the screenshot has been taken with this method.

  • Windows 8/8.1 – You can instantly save an image of the whole screen by clicking ⊞ Win+⎙ PrtScr. The screen will then go dark for a while, and the screenshot will be saved as a.png" />
  • Windows 8.1 – You can share a screenshot of your desktop with the so-called Charms bar. Press ⊞ Win+C to open the Charms bar and click on 'Share'. Windows will then take a screenshot of your desktop and then give you a list of apps you can share the image with.
Save a Screenshot Step 2

Step 2. Take a screenshot of the active window only by pressing

Alt+⎙ PrtScr.

This will copy an image from the selected window to the clipboard. You then need to paste the image somewhere, such as in Paint or another editing program. After pasting, save the file to keep the image.

Save a Screenshot Step 3

Step 3. Use Snipping Tool to take custom screenshots

The Snipping Tool is available in Windows Vista and newer. It allows you to select what you want in your screenshot, as well as add simple annotations. You can open the Snipping Tool by clicking the Start button and typing "Snipping Tool".

See here for detailed instructions on how to use the Snipping Tool

Save a Screenshot Step 4

Step 4. Take a screenshot of a game using the in-game screenshots button

Many games do not allow you to take screenshots with the ⎙ PrtScr button. Instead, many games have their own screenshot button that you can find in the Controls section of the menu. If the game you are playing does not have a dedicated button for screenshots, you can use a video capture program like Fraps for screenshots.

Step 2. Capture an image of the active window by clicking

Alt+⎙ PrtScr.

Again, this works with most Linux distributions, but not all. The screenshot of the active window is now copied to the clipboard, or the screenshot utility opens and asks you to save the image.
