This article will show you how to format your videos in High-Definition for YouTube to play in full HD. YouTube supports all kinds of HD formats from 720p to 2160p (4K). You can also upload videos with HDR.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Capturing the video

Upload an HD Video to YouTube Step 1

Step 1. Record the video in HD resolution

Your videos need a square pixel aspect ratio to display properly. Use one of the following resolutions to record an HD video:

  • '720p': 1280 x 720
  • '1080p': 1920 x 1080
  • 1440p': 2560 x 1440
  • '2160p': 3840 x 2160

Step 3. Select the appropriate bit rate for the video

The bit rate of the video is the speed at which the codec of the video plays the video. Your video should be optimized for your video resolution, frame rate, and whether or not your video has HDR (high dynamic range). YouTube recommends the following frame rates for standard bit rates (24 - 30 fps) and high bit rates (48 - 60 fps):

  • '2160p': Standard frame rate: 35-45 Mbps, High frame rate: 53 -68 Mpbs.
  • '2160p (HDR)': Standard frame rate: 44 - 56 Mbps, High frame rate: 66 - 85 Mbps.
  • '1440p': Standard frame rate: 16 Mbps, High frame rate: 24 Mbps.
  • '1440p (HDR)': Standard frame rate: 20 Mbps, High frame rate: 30 Mbps.
  • '1080p': Standard frame rate: 8 Mbps, High frame rate: 12 Mbps.
  • '1080p (HDR)': Standard frame rate: 10 Mbps, High frame rate: 15 Mbps.
  • '720p': Standard frame rate: 5 Mbps, High frame rate: 7.5 Mbps.
  • '720p (HDR)': Standard frame rate: 6.5 Mbps, High frame rate: 9.5 Mbps.
