This article will teach you how to send an audio file via email. If you're dealing with large files, you'll need to upload them to a cloud service (like Google Drive) first, then share them from there.

Method 1 of 4: Send an audio file as an attachment

Step 1. Find your audio file

You can find your file by typing its name in Finder (Mac) or the search bar in the start menu (Windows). If the file is on your desktop, you can find it there too.

Step 2. Two-finger (Mac) or right-click (Windows) on the file

This will open a drop-down menu.

Step 3. Click View Information (Mac) or Properties (Windows).

You will now open a list of the file's properties, including the file size in bytes.

Step 4. Find the file size

You'll find it to the right of the 'size' heading on both Mac and Windows. On a Mac, you may need to click General to see the Size heading. Most email providers have a file size limit for attachments:

  • gmail - 25 megabytes
  • iCloud Mail - 20 megabytes
  • Outlook - 34 megabytes
  • Yahoo - 25 megabytes

Step 5. Determine if your file can be sent as an attachment

If your audio file is larger than your email provider's limit, you'll need to use one of the other methods in this article.

Step 6. Open your email service on a computer

Some popular email providers are:

  • gmail - Go to https://www.mail.google.com/. You may need to login first.
  • iCloud Mail - Go to https://www.icloud.com/#mail. You may need to log in first and then click on 'Mail'.
  • Outlook - Go to https://outlook.live.com/owa/. You may need to login first.
  • Yahoo - Go to https://www.mail.yahoo.com/. You may need to log in first and then click the mail icon in the top right corner of the page.

Step 7. Create a new message

This is how you do this:

  • on gmail: Click "Compose" in the top left corner of your inbox.
  • on iCloud Mail: click on the pencil and square icon at the top of the page.
  • on Outlook: Click '+New' above your list of emails in your Inbox.
  • on Yahoo: Click "Compose" in the top left corner of your inbox.

Step 8. Add a recipient and subject

Enter the recipient's email address (or name, if the recipient is in your contact list) in the 'To' field of the message box, and enter a subject in the 'Subject' field below.

A subject is not necessarily necessary to send your message, but it can clarify the reason for your message

Step 9. Click and drag the audio file into your email window

As soon as you release the mouse, the file will be added as an attachment to your email.

You can also click the paperclip icon and then select your audio file from the pop-up window

Step 10. Click Submit

Your email will now be sent to the recipient, after which he or she can open the audio file by opening your email and clicking the 'Download' button or link.

Method 2 of 4: Via Google Drive

You may first need to find the location of the audio file in the list of folders on the left side of the window.

You can also drag and drop your audio file into the Google Drive window

Step 5. Wait for your file to upload, then click on it

Step 6. Click on the 'Share' button

This option has a person and a + as an icon, and is located in the top right corner of the window. By clicking on this you will see a window with a field for e-mail addresses.

Step 7. Type in an email address and press Tab ↹

The email address you enter must belong to the person you want to share your file with.

With this button you send a link to the audio file to your chosen contact(s). When they click 'Open' below the audio file in the mail, they will be taken to the file's page, where they can download the file using the down arrow in the top right corner of the page.

You can also type a message for your recipient(s) in the text field below the email field

Method 3 of 4: With OneDrive

Step 1. Go to the Outlook OneDrive website

If you're not already signed in to OneDrive, enter your email address and password first

You'll find this tab near the top of the OneDrive window. This will open a pop-up window.

If you have selected files you will not be able to see this tab. Click the reload button in your browser (the round arrow at the top left in most browsers and to the right of the URL bar in Safari) to deselect all files

Step 3. Select your audio file and click Open

You may first need to find the location of the audio file in the list of folders on the left side of the window.

You can also drag your audio file into the OneDrive window

Step 4. Wait for your audio file to be uploaded

How long this takes depends on the file size and your internet speed.

Step 5. Click on the top right corner of your audio file in OneDrive

This is how you select the file.

This option is in the top left corner of the window.

This will open a window with a field for email addresses.

The email address you enter must belong to the person you want to share your file with.

With this button you send a link with the audio file to your chosen contact(s). When they open the email, the recipients can click 'View in OneDrive' to listen to the file.

Method 4 of 4: Using iCloud Drive

Step #2. Click on iCloud Drive

This is a white app with a blue cloud, in the top row of options.

You'll find this icon at the top of the iCloud Drive window.

Step 4. Select your audio file and click Open

You may first need to find the location of the audio file in the list of folders on the left side of the window.

You can also drag your audio file into the iCloud Drive window

Step 5. Wait for your file to upload and open it

You can open your file by double clicking on it. iCloud Drive doesn't have an option to share files like other cloud services, so you'll have to manually copy your audio file's link and share it with a friend.

Step 6. Click on the URL of your audio file

This is the long row of numbers and letters in the address bar at the top of your browser window. This is how you select the URL.

This will open a drop-down menu.

This will copy the URL.

Since you can't share the URL through iCloud Drive, you'll need to paste it into an email.

Step 10. Create a new message

This process varies by email provider. For example, in Gmail and Yahoo you have to click on "Compose", but in Outlook you have to click on "New".
