This wikiHow teaches you how to download a video from the Internet using VLC Media Player. Make sure you have VLC Media Player installed on your Windows or Mac computer (if you haven't already) before proceeding.
Step 1. Go to the video you want to download
Using your browser, go to https://www.youtube.com/ and find a YouTube video you want to download. Start the video to make sure you have chosen the correct video.
Use the search bar at the top to search for the video if you're having trouble finding the video
Step 2. Copy the web address (URL) of the video
Click and drag across the address bar at the top of the browser window to select the URL of the video, then press Ctrl+C (Windows) or ⌘ Command+C (Mac). This will copy the URL of the video.
Step #3. Open VLC
This is the app with the orange traffic cone icon.
If you have not yet downloaded VLC, you can still do so for free via https://www.videolan.org. VLC is an open-source media player with many useful features for playing all kinds of files
Step 4. Open a new Network Stream
click on Media, and then on Open Network Stream.
On the Mac:
click on File, and then on Open network.
Step 5. Paste the URL of the YouTube video into the field
Make sure the full URL is copied.
Step 6. Click Play (Windows} or Open (Mac).
This will open the YouTube video in VLC.
Step 7. View the Codec Information
click on Additional, and then on Codec Information.
click on Additional, and then on Media information.
Step 8. Copy the 'Location' field at the bottom
This is a very long address, so make sure you select everything.
Right click on the Location field and click Select all, and right click again and select copy.
Right click on the Location field and select Open URL.
Step 9. Open a new browser tab, paste the copied URL and press ↵ Enter
Now the video will load directly in your browser.
You can skip this step if you're on a Mac and selected "Open URL" in the previous step
Step 10. Right click on the video in your browser and select Save video as
This will open the Save As window.
Step 11. Name the video and select a location
By default, the video is named 'video playback'. You can change this to a name of your choice and specify where you want to save the video.
Step 12. Click on Save
The video will be downloaded to your computer with the highest quality and saved in the specified location.
- In the 'Save As' window, you can change the video format in which the video will be saved (e.g. MP4) before clicking Save clicks.
- You obviously need a working internet connection to be able to download videos via VLC.
- You can download files from most websites with VLC Media Player; however, there are server restrictions, so you may not be able to download from the site you've chosen (eg, government websites often don't allow anonymous users to download video files directly).
