McAfee protects your computer from viruses. However, sometimes you will have to disable it to install a program on your laptop or PC, for example. You can then temporarily disable McAfee in the system menu. Would you rather completely remove the program from your computer? That is still quite difficult. Continue reading Step 1 to learn how to disable or remove McAfee from your computer.
Method 1 of 2: Temporarily disable McAfee
Step 1. Consider leaving McAfee on
Although it is recommended that you temporarily disable your antivirus when installing some programs, this is almost never really necessary. The installation can be carried out as usual. If you turn off your virus scanner while installing a program, you run the risk that malware will also be installed on your computer.
Step 2. Double click on the McAfee logo in the taskbar
This is located at the bottom right of your desktop. The logo looks like an "M" in a red shield. If you don't see the logo, click the arrow at the edge of the taskbar to display all background programs.
Step 3. Click on "Real-Time Scanning"
You will see this button at the top of the screen, directly below the green banner. It should now be set to "On".
Step 4. Disable Real-Time Scanning
If you click the button, you can temporarily disable the real-time scanning. Make sure you don't leave the scanner off for too long. After all, the longer you are unprotected, the greater the chance of virus problems.
Step 5. Turn off the Firewall
If you want to turn off the McAfee Firewall, you can do it in much the same way. Click the "Firewall" button. This is located under the "Real-Time Scanning" button. You can now set how long you want to disable the firewall. Also make sure that this is not too long.
If you want to install a program that bypasses the Firewall, consider opening ports instead of disabling the entire firewall
Method 2 of 2: Uninstall McAfee
Step 1. Uninstall the McAfee software
McAfee is tricky to remove and to get it done at all, you need additional software. Before you get started, however, you will first need to delete the main files of the program. You can do this by going to Programs in the Control Panel.
Click on start and then on "Control Panel". If you are using Windows 8, press ⊞ Win+X and then "Control Panel"
Step 2. Click on Programs or "Uninstall a program"
If you are using Windows XP, click on "Add/Remove Programs"
Step 3. Find McAfee in the list
It may take a few seconds for the list of programs to load. If all goes well, there are several McAfee products on the list. You will have to remove all of these.
Step 4. Uninstall the programs
Click the Uninstall button next to each McAfee program. Go through the necessary steps to actually remove the program from your computer and do this with all McAfee products.
Step 5. Download the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool
With this program you can remove McAfee products from your computer for free. You can find the program on McAfee's site; Search Google for "MCPR" and you should be able to click right through.
Step 6. Open the program
Once you have downloaded the program, you can let it do its job and uninstall the McAfee software. You will need to agree to the license agreement and fill out a Captcha to do this. When the program is finished, you will be notified if the McAfee products were successfully uninstalled. Restart your computer to complete the process.
