A RAR file is a compressed archive that can contain hundreds of other files. RAR, in addition to its strong built-in encryption, is popular due to its ability to compress files. With few clicks, you can encrypt and password protect any RAR archive file. Without the correct password, unauthorized users will not be able to view the names of the files in the RAR.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Windows

Add a Password to a RAR File Step 1

Step 1. Download and install WinRAR

With this program, you can create RAR archives that you can protect with a password. WinRAR is not free, but you can try the trial version for 40 days before you have to pay to continue using it. You can download WinRAR from rarlab.com/download.htm.

  • See wikiHow for more detailed instructions on installing WinRAR.
  • Do not use the "Get WinRAR FREE with TrialPay" option. This will attempt to install adware on your computer.
