This wikiHow teaches you how to download and install WhatsApp on an iPhone, Android, or computer.
Method 1 of 3: On an Android
Step 1. Open Google Play Store on your Android
It's a white app with a multicolored triangle on it. You can find this app in the App Drawer.
Step #2. Tap on the magnifying glass icon
This is located in the top right corner of the screen.
Step 3. Type whatsapp in the search bar and then tap Search
This will search the Play Store for WhatsApp, which should be the first result on the next page.
Step 4. Tap on 'WhatsApp Messenger'
This will redirect you to WhatsApp's app page.
Step 5. Tap INSTALL
This button is located in the top right corner of the screen.
Step 6. Tap on ACCEPT when that option appears
It's at the bottom of the pop-up menu. Clicking this will start the download of WhatsApp on your Android.
Step 7. Wait for WhatsApp to finish downloading and then tap OPEN
This is on the right side of the screen. Now that WhatsApp is installed on your Android, you can set up the app.
Step 8. Tap AGREE AND NEXT
This is at the bottom of the screen.
Step 9. Type in your phone number
You type in the field in the middle of the page.
Step 10. Tap OK when this option appears
WhatsApp will now send an SMS with a verification code to the phone number entered.
If you can't receive text messages on your phone, tap Call Me. Your phone will then receive an automated phone call with the verification code spoken.
Step 11. Open your phone's messaging app
You will see that a new message has been received.
Step 12. Tap on the new message
It should say "Your WhatsApp code is [six digit code], but you can also click this link to verify the device."
Step 13. Type the six digit code into WhatsApp
As long as you don't make any typos, this will verify your phone and take you to the account creation page.
Step 14. Enter your name and post a photo
You don't need to add a photo, but it will help other contacts recognize you (especially if you use a different name).
- If you have already downloaded WhatsApp, you will first be given the option to restore your chat history.
- You can also tap Use Facebook Information, to use your Facebook name and image.
Step 15. Tap Next
It's in the top right corner of the screen. WhatsApp is now installed and set up on your Android - you can now start using WhatsApp whenever you want.
Method 2 of 3: On an iPhone
Step #1. Open the iPhone App Store
This is a light blue app with a white A on it. You will probably see this on the home screen.
Step #2. Tap on Search
This button, which resembles a magnifying glass, is located at the bottom of the screen.
Step #3. Tap on the search bar
You will see this at the top of the screen.
Step 4. Type whatsapp in the search bar and then tap Search
This button is located at the bottom right of the screen.
Step 5. Tap DOWNLOAD, right next to WhatsApp
WhatsApp resembles a green app with a white speech bubble containing a telephone.
If you've downloaded WhatsApp before, this button is a cloud with a downward pointing arrow. Tapping on the cloud causes WhatsApp to be downloaded.
Step 6. Tap INSTALL when that option appears
This button is in the same place as TO DOWNLOAD.
Step 7. Enter your Apple ID password if prompted
If you recently signed in to the App Store with your Apple ID, you don't need to do this.
You can also use your Touch ID, if your phone has that feature
Step 8. Wait for the download to finish and then tap OPEN
It's on the right side of WhatsApp. This will open WhatsApp, after which you can proceed with the settings.
Step 9. Tap OK or Do Not Allow on the pop-up screens
These screens ask you whether WhatsApp can access your contacts and whether the app can send you notifications.
Step 10. Tap Agree & Next
This is at the bottom of the screen.
Step 11. Type in your phone number and then tap Done
Your phone number must be entered in the field in the middle of the screen; Finished is in the top right corner.
Step 12. Tap Yes when you can
WhatsApp will then send a confirmation code to your iPhone message box.
If your phone cannot receive SMS, tap the Call me-option. You will then receive an automated phone call in which the verification code is spoken.
Step 13. Press the Home button and open your message box
This is a green app with a white speech bubble.
Step 14. Open the SMS from WhatsApp
It will say something like this: Your WhatsApp code is [six digit code]…
Step 15. Type the six-digit code into WhatsApp
As long as you do this correctly, you can continue to fill out your profile.
Step 16. Enter your name
Do this by tapping the Your name field in the center of the screen and then typing in your name.
- You can also add a profile picture on this page.
- You may also have the option to click restore, in the top right corner of the screen, to restore your chat history. This only applies if you have used WhatsApp on this phone before.
Step 17. Tap Done
WhatsApp is now installed and set up on your iPhone, so you can start using WhatsApp!
Method 3 of 3: On a desktop
Step 1. Go to the WhatsApp website on a computer
That's https://www.whatsapp.com/. You can download a desktop version of WhatsApp from this site.
You must also have WhatsApp on your phone to log in to the desktop version.
Step 2. Click on Mac or Windows PC
This option is near the bottom of the webpage.
Step 3. Click on the green DOWNLOAD button
It's on the right side of the page. Clicking this button will download the WhatsApp installation file, although you may need to select a download location first.
Depending on your computer, the button will say 'Download for Windows 64-Bit' or 'Download for Mac OS X'.
Step 4. Wait for the installation file to download and then double click on it
It's probably in your computer's default 'Downloads' folder (on the desktop).
Step 5. Wait for WhatsApp to be installed
When the installation is finished, you will see the WhatsApp icon on your desktop. This is a white phone on a green background.

Step 6. If WhatsApp doesn't open, double click on the WhatsApp icon
This will open the WhatsApp login page, where you will see a square with black and white blocks (this is a QR code).
Step 7. Open WhatsApp on your phone
If you don't have WhatsApp on your phone yet, you must install the app on your Android or iPhone before you can continue.
Step 8. Open the WhatsApp code scanner
Depending on your phone, here's how to get to the QR scanner:
- iPhone - Tap on Institutions in the lower right corner of the screen. Then tap WhatsApp Web/Desktop, somewhere at the top of the screen.
- android - Tap on ⋮ and then tap WhatsApp Web at the top of the menu.
Step 9. Point your phone's camera at the QR code
After a short moment, WhatsApp will scan the code, giving your computer permission to log in to WhatsApp. You should now be able to use WhatsApp on your computer too!
- If the QR code has expired, click the arrow in the center of it to refresh the code.
- If the code cannot be scanned, make sure the entire QR code is visible on your phone's screen – you may need to increase the distance between your phone and the computer screen.
