Your WhatsApp call data is at least as important as the text messages on your phone. To avoid losing your data if your phone is stolen or dropped in the trash, it's best to back up your WhatsApp conversations. Fortunately, you can easily do this in the WhatsApp settings!

Steps

Method 1 of 2: On an iPhone

Step #1. Make sure iCloud Drive is turned on

You must have access to iCloud Drive to back up your conversations on WhatsApp. This is how you do this:

  • Tap the Settings app to open your phone's settings.
  • Tap the "iCloud" tab.
  • Tap the "iCloud Drive" tab.
  • Move the slider at 'iCloud Drive' to the right; it will now turn green.

Step #2. Close the Settings app

Simply tap the Home button to close the settings.

You can back up your WhatsApp data in WhatsApp settings.

It's in the bottom right corner of your screen.

This will open your conversation settings.

You will now be taken to the chat backup settings page.

WhatsApp will then immediately create a backup. In this menu you also have other options:

  • 'Auto backup' – Opt for automatic backups that are made daily, weekly or monthly.
  • 'Add videos' – Also add the videos from your conversations to the backups.
  • If this is your first backup, it may take a few minutes.

Step 8. Wait for your backup to finish

When WhatsApp is ready, you will see "Last Backup: Today" at the top of the page.

This will open your conversation settings.

Here you have several options:

  • Backup to Google Drive – Back up your conversations to Google Drive.
  • 'Auto Backup' – The settings for automatic backups. You can choose daily, weekly, or monthly backups, or no automatic backups at all (the default setting).
  • 'Add videos' – Enable this option to also add videos from your conversations to the backups.

Step 6. Tap on 'Back up to Google Drive'

You must now choose a frequency.

Step 7. Tap "Backup" to backup your conversations right away

This process will continue as long as both your phone and Google Drive have enough space for the backup.

Step 8. Choose an account to save your backup

If you don't have a Google account connected to WhatsApp yet, you'll need to tap "Add Account" and enter your email address and password.

You do this by tapping 'Back up via', and then selecting a network.
