1. Open the Twitter app.
2. Tap Messages.
3. Tap the new message icon in the top right corner of the screen.
4. Choose a recipient by typing the person's name and then tapping the correct username.
5. Tap Next.
6. Enter your message.
7. Tap Send.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Send a private message (mobile)
Step #1. Tap on the Twitter app
Log in if you have not already done so and are prompted to do so. You can read here how to create a Twitter account.
Step #2. Tap on the envelope icon
This icon can be found in the top right corner of the screen.
Step #3. Tap the new message icon
This is the icon with a speech cloud and a plus sign in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Step 4. Type in a username
Step 5. Tap on the username
The name will appear in the text box.
Step 6. Tap 'Next'
Step 7. Type your message in the text box
You can also add images, animated GIFs and emoticons to your message by tapping the appropriate icon.
Step 8. Tap on 'Send'
The submit button is located to the right of the text box and will not appear until text, an image, an emoticon, or a-g.webp" />
Depending on the user settings, the recipient may or may not receive a notification that he or she has a new message
Method 2 of 2: Send a private message from a browser
Step 1. Go to www.twitter.com
Step 2. Log in to your Twitter account
If you are already logged in you will see your Twitter feed. If you don't have a Twitter account yet and want to create one, here's how to create a Twitter account.
Step 3. Click on 'Messages'
This option can be found in the top left corner between the 'Notifications' option and the Twitter logo.
Step 4. Click on 'New Message'
Step 5. Type in a username
Depending on your user settings, you may only be able to message people who already follow you.
Step 6. Press ↵ Enter
Step 7. Click on 'Next'
By clicking 'Next' in the lower right corner of the window, you will see the message box.
Step 8. Type a message
The text box is located at the bottom of the window.
You can also add emoticons, animated GIFs and photos by clicking the corresponding icons next to the text box
Step 9. Click on 'Send'
This option is located in the lower right corner of the window and becomes clickable when you have typed a message or added an emoticon, animated-g.webp" />
Depending on the user settings, the recipient may or may not receive a notification that he or she has received a message
Tips
- When you have sent a private message to someone and the person has sent you a message back, you can simply click on the dialog box below the other person's reply to have a private conversation with them.
- You can also send a private message from your profile page by clicking the envelope icon.
Warnings
- You can no longer retrieve a sent private message.
- Sending messages to people you don't follow may be considered spamming and they may unfollow or block you.
