Steps
Step #1. Open the Snapchat app
You can recognize this app by a yellow icon with a white ghost in it.
Step #2. Tap on 'Chat'
It's the little text cloud in the bottom left corner of the screen. Now the chat window will open.

Step #3. Tap and hold a conversation
Step 4. Swipe your finger to the right without your finger coming off the screen
This allows you to drag the conversation onto the screen and you can read the message without opening the conversation (if you open the conversation, the other person will receive a notification).
Step 5. Read the message
You cannot scroll up and down.
Don't let your finger go off the screen. As soon as you release your finger, the conversation will open and you will see that the message has been read
Step 6. Drag your finger to the left again
Now you go back to the chat window.
Step 7. Release your finger from the screen
The message is still unread.
