It is not possible to change your Snapchat username. However, you can delete your old account and then create a new account with a different username. Another option is to change your display name, which is the name your friends and other users see when you send a Snap or chat with someone.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Deleting your old Snapchat account

Step #1. Open the Snapchat app

The app has a yellow icon with a ghost.

Step #2. Swipe down anywhere on your screen

Doing this will open your account page.

Step #3. Tap on ⚙️

You can find this in the top right corner of the screen. When you tap on it, it becomes Institutionsmenu open.

Step #4. Scroll down and tap on Support

You can find this under the heading 'More information'.

Step 5. Tap on My Account & Security

This is the last option on the screen.

Step 7. Tap on Delete my account

This is in the middle of the menu. Tapping it will open a new page explaining how to delete your account.

If you want a new username but don't want to delete your existing account, you can just create a new account

Step 8. Tap on Account Portal

Step 9. Enter your username and password

Do this to confirm that you want to delete your account.

If your username is not filled in automatically, you will need to enter that as well

Step 10. Tap Continue

Your Snapchat account is now deactivated and will be deleted after 30 days.

  • If you change your mind, you can reactivate your account by logging in within 30 days of deactivating your account.
  • As of February 2017, there is no longer a way to export your friends list from Snapchat. You will be able to find most of your friends by phone number in your phone's Contacts app, but you can also take a screenshot of your friends list before deleting your account.

Part 2 of 3: Creating a new Snapchat account

Step #1. Open Snapchat

Enter your username and password if you are not logged in automatically

Step #2. Swipe down anywhere on your screen

Doing this opens the user screen.

Step #3. Tap on ⚙️

You can find this in the top right corner of the screen. When you tap on it, it becomes Institutionsmenu open.

Step #4. Scroll down and tap Sign Out

This is at the bottom of the menu.

Step 5. Tap Sign In

By tapping this you create a new Snapchat account.

Step 6. Enter your name

Enter your first and last name in the appropriate boxes.

Step 7. Tap Sign In and Accept

Then enter your date of birth when prompted and tap 'Continue'.

Step 8. Enter your new username

Type in the new username you chose for your Snapchat account.

Step 9. Enter an email address

This must be a different email address than the one you used for your old Snapchat account.

Step 10. Follow the rest of the on-screen instructions

You can now skip steps and add new or old friends from your contact list.

  • When you have set up your account you can go back to the Institutionsmenu and change your email address and phone number.
  • You can delete your old Snapchat account if you wish, or leave it active if you think you might start using it again.

Part 3 of 3: Changing your display name on Snapchat

Step #1. Open Snapchat

Doing this will open your account page.

You can find this in the top right corner of the screen. When you tap on it, it becomes Institutionsmenu open.

You can find this at the top of the menu.

Step 5. Enter your new display name

You can only enter your first name or your first and last name. Make sure to pick a name that your friends will recognize.

  • If you choose not to use a display name, tap Delete name. Other users will still be able to see your username, but if your username isn't clearly recognizable, your friends won't be able to find you easily.

Step 6. Tap on Save

Step 7. Tap Back

It's the arrow in the top left corner of the screen. Now other people on Snapchat will see the name you just entered when you send Snaps or post a story.
