Emoticons are made up of different key combinations that you can use to display facial expressions when you are messaging or chatting on the Internet. Examples of emoticons are smiling and sad faces, winks and angry expressions. You can also use emoticons to represent a particular image, such as an angel, a devil, or an animal. In order to create emoticons on Facebook, you have to learn the different key combinations that are then displayed graphically. You can type them into your Facebook status or chat. Method 1 of 2: Learning the different emoticons

Step 1. Make a smiling face
You can display a smile by typing a colon, immediately followed by a closing parenthesis. Example::)

Step 2. Make a sad face
You can do this by entering a colon followed by an open parenthesis. Example::(

Step 3. Make a wide, happy smile
You do this by typing a colon followed by a capital "D." Example::D

Step 4. Wink at the receiver
A wink consists of a semicolon followed by a closing parenthesis. Example:;)

Step 5. Stick out your tongue
To create this emoticon, enter a colon followed by a capital "P." Example::P

Step 6. Let out a cry of surprise
Surprise can be expressed with a colon followed by a capital "O." Example::O

Step 7. Display an expression of doubt
If in doubt, you can indicate this by typing a colon followed by a forward slash. Example::/

Step 8. Indicate that you are angry
You can achieve this by typing the "greater than" symbol, followed by a colon and an open parenthesis. Example: >:(

Step 9. Indicate to the recipient that you are confused
You do this by typing a lowercase "o" followed by a period and a capital "O." Example: o.O

Step 10. Show your innocence by portraying an angel
You can make an angel by typing a capital "O", followed by a colon and a closing parenthesis. Example: O:)

Step 11. Show how bad you are by portraying a devil
You can create a devil by typing the number "3" followed by a colon and a closing parenthesis. Example: 3:)

Step 12. Offer the recipient a rose
You can display a rose by tapping an at sign, followed by a tilde, closing a parenthesis, and three or four more tildes for the flower's stem. Example: @~)~~~

Step 13. Make the head of a penguin
You can make a penguin head by typing the "less than" symbol, followed by an opening parenthesis, a double quote, and finally a closing parenthesis. Example: <(")
Method 2 of 2: Using Emoticons on Facebook

Step 1. Use emoticons in the Facebook Chat
- During your session on Facebook, go to the bottom right corner of the page and click the "Chat" button.
- Click on the name of the Facebook friend you want to chat with and a new chat window will open.
- Type the key combination for any emoticon in the chat window and then press the enter key to send the message to your friend. Your friend will then see the emoticon in his chat window.

Step 2. Use emoticons in your status updates on Facebook
- During your session on Facebook, click on your profile page or the "Home" link to update your status.
- Type the key combination for the emoticon of your choice in the text field and then click the "Place" button. The emoticon will then appear on your timeline and in your friends' news feeds.
