Your Apple Watch uses data from your iPhone to display it on your watch. Sign in with your Apple ID when you set up or do it later through the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. This allows certain data such as contacts, calendars and email to sync through iCloud. You install Apple Watch apps via your iPhone. They are then automatically transferred to your Apple Watch, which syncs with your iPhone whenever both devices are near each other.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Pairing your Apple Watch

Sync Your Apple Watch with an iPhone Step 1

Step 1. Update your iPhone

Always make sure you have the latest iOS version installed on your iPhone. This way you get the most benefit from your Apple Watch. You must have at least iOS 8.2 installed on an iPhone 5 or later to pair with an Apple Watch. Check your iOS version by going to "General" in Settings, or by connecting your iPhone to your computer and updating via iTunes.

Go to iOS Update for instructions on how to update your iPhone

Step 2. Activate bluetooth on your iPhone

Your Apple Watch connects to your iPhone via bluetooth, so make sure your bluetooth is turned on. You can do this very quickly by swiping up from the home screen and tapping the bluetooth button.

You also need an internet connection to pair, so make sure you have WiFi or mobile data

Step 3. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone

This app is on one of your home screens. The conditions are that you have an iPhone 5 or later and that your operating system is at least iOS 8.2. If your phone does not meet either of these two conditions, the app will not be available for your phone.

Step 6. Point your iPhone at the pattern on your Apple Watch

Hold your phone so that your smartwatch appears in the viewfinder on your iPhone. At that point, your Apple Watch will vibrate and they will be paired.

If you can't pair with the camera, you can also use the 'Pair Apple Watch manually' feature. Select your smartwatch from the list that appears and then enter the code on your iPhone that appears on your Apple Watch

Step 7. Tap 'Set up as new Apple Watch' on your iPhone

Your smartwatch will now be configured as a new device and will receive all necessary data from your iPhone.

If you've had an Apple Watch before, you can also restore from an old iCloud backup

Step 8. Select which arm you wear the smartwatch on

This is important in connection with the sensors. Preferably use your non-dominant hand, as this makes it easier to operate the Apple Watch.

Tap 'left' or 'right' on your iPhone to choose which wrist you want to wear the Apple Watch on

Step 9. Sign in with your Apple ID on your iPhone

This is not mandatory, but it will give you access to the more advanced features of your smartwatch, such as Apple Pay. This allows you to pay by holding your watch against a card reader. Use the same Apple ID on your phone and on your watch, otherwise it won't work.

Step 10. Set a passcode for your smartwatch

This protects the watch in case it is stolen. You have to enter the code every time you put your Apple Watch on again. You are not obliged to set an access code.

You can also specify whether you want your smartwatch to unlock automatically when you unlock your iPhone

Sync Your Apple Watch with an iPhone Step 11

Step 11. Install dedicated Apple Watch apps

You can indicate whether you want to do this during set-up, or whether you want to do this later. You cannot install apps directly from the smartwatch. This must always be done via your iPhone, with which you also share the relevant data.

You can read further on how to indicate exactly which apps you do or do not want to install and sync, if you do not want to do this all at once during the set-up

Sync Your Apple Watch with an iPhone Step 12

Step 12. Wait quietly while your Apple Watch syncs with your iPhone

This takes shorter or longer, depending on whether you want to transfer the apps to your smartwatch now or later. Your Apple Watch will notify you when the sync is complete.

Part 2 of 2: Synchronizing content

Sync Your Apple Watch with an iPhone Step 13

Step 1. Sign in to your Apple Watch with your Apple ID

This will initiate synchronization of all content associated with this Apple ID. This content includes your contacts, your email, and your favorite iCloud photos. In the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, check that you are signed in with the correct Apple ID:

  • Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  • Tap the My Watch tab at the bottom of the screen, then tap General.
  • Tap Apple ID, then sign in with your Apple ID. All the relevant iCloud data will now start syncing with your Apple Watch. This may take a while. Make sure you are logged in on your smartwatch with the same Apple ID as on your iPhone.

Step 2. Transfer apps and data from your iPhone to your Apple Watch

In addition to the data from your iCloud, you can also transfer apps from your iPhone to your smartwatch. You may have already installed some things during setup, but you can always adjust this again via the Watch app on your iPhone:

  • Open the Watch app and tap "My Watch" at the bottom of the screen.
  • Scroll down and tap the app you want to add or remove. The available apps are apps suitable for both iPhone and Apple Watch.
  • Toggle the 'Show app on Apple Watch' slider on or off. This determines whether or not the app is installed on your smartwatch. Syncing may take a while. Keep in mind that the processing of the data is still handled by your iPhone.

Step 3. Sync music to your Apple Watch so you can listen without your iPhone

Normally you only use your smartwatch as a kind of remote control when you play music on your iPhone. When you sync a playlist with your Apple Watch, you can listen without your iPhone, as long as you make sure you have headphones or earphones with a Bluetooth connection. Create the playlist on your iPhone first:

  • Open the Music app on your iPhone and create a new playlist. It should not exceed 2 gigabytes, as this is the maximum storage space of your Apple Watch. This is about 200 tracks. All the music you want to listen to on your smartwatch must be in the same playlist.
  • Place your Apple Watch on the charger and check whether the bluetooth on your iPhone is turned on.
  • Open the Watch app on your iPhone and select "My Watch" at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap "Music" and then select "Sync Playlist." Select the playlist you want to transfer to your smartwatch. How long it takes depends on the length of your playlist. Only when you have paired headphones with your Apple Watch, you can see and play the music on your smartwatch.
