Steps

Avoid Scams on OfferUp on Android Step 1

Step 1. Check the buyer's or seller's rating

Open the user profile to check the star rating, and scroll down to read the reviews. The more gold stars in the user profile, the higher the rating.

  • The number of ratings is displayed next to the stars.
  • Only positive reviews are displayed publicly. The reviews contain descriptive terms such as "Communicative" and "Item as described", rather than full sentences.

Step 2. Look for a TruYou badge

When a buyer or seller verifies their identity with TruYou, a verification badge will appear in the lower right corner of their profile picture. To get a TruYou badge, users must upload their photo ID, as well as a selfie proving that they are the person in the photo. They also need to verify their phone number via SMS.

Step 3. Communicate only through OfferUp

All communication must take place within the app. You should never have to give your phone number or email address to another OfferUp user. If a buyer tries to move the communication to another app or service, politely decline.

Step 4. Avoid get-rich-quick plans

If an OfferUp user tries to persuade you to participate in an “investment opportunity” or other money making offer that seems too good to be true, it is likely that they are trying to scam you. Limit communication with potential buyers or sellers to discussing the item for sale.

Step 5. Accept or use only Offer-Up approved payment methods

Use cash when buying an item in person. Never accept or pay with MoneyGram, Western Union, PayPal, Venmo, gift cards or bank transfers. All these services can be used to scam you.

  • When buying or selling an item to be shipped, payment must be processed through OfferUp. Do not agree to make or accept a payment through any other service.
  • If you receive a check from an OfferUp user, do not cash it. Many scams start with sending a large, fraudulent check.

Step 6. Meet at a designated Community MeetUp spot

OfferUp works with local businesses and police stations to better ensure your safety. These locations are well lit and included for your safety.

  • To find a designated Community MeetUp spot, open the message with the buyer or seller and tap the Locationicon (an inverted droplet) at the bottom of the screen. Designated meeting points are marked in green.
  • To suggest a meeting point, tap the green icon and Send in the top right corner of the screen.
  • When you arrive at the MeetUp spot, look for the green OfferUp sign. Do your best to make the sale close to that board.
