This article will teach you how to block a phone number on an iPhone, Android, or landline phone, and how to add your phone number to the registry to stop being called.
Steps
Method 1 of 8: Block a number on an iPhone
Step 1. Open the Phone app
on your iPhone.
This is a green app with a white telephone receiver. It's on your Start screen or at the bottom of the screen.
Step 2. Press Recent or Contacts.
If you want to block a number from someone who is not your contact, press 'Recent'. Tap "Contacts" to block a contact.
Step 3. Press ⓘ next to a number or press a contact's name
It's to the right of the number you want to block. If you're blocking a contact instead, just tap their name.
Step #4. Scroll down and press Block this Caller
This should be the last option on this page.
Step 5. Press Block Contact when prompted
You will see this red text at the bottom of the screen. This will block the number and prevent you from being called by it in the future.
Step 6. Manage your blocked callers
Your iPhone has a list of all the numbers you have blocked. To view the list you need to do the following:
- Open
'Institutions'
- Scroll down and press 'Phone'
- Press 'Block Calls & Identification'
- View all numbers under the heading 'BLOCKED CONTACTS'.
Method 2 of 8: Using the Phone app on a Samsung Galaxy
Step 1. Open the Phone app
on your Android.
This phone-shaped app should be on your Android's Home screen.
Step 2. Press ⋮ at the top right corner of the 'Phone' screen
This will bring up a drop-down menu.
Step #3. Press Settings
This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
Step #4. Press Block Numbers
It's under the "CALL SETTINGS" heading near the center of the screen.
Step 5. Enter a number you want to block
Tap the text field below the "Add phone number" heading, then type the number you want to block.
You can also tap "Recent" or "Contacts" under the "Add Phone Number" heading. Tap a number in your recent list or your contact list and tap Done
Step 6. Press ＋
This button is to the right of the phone number you just added. This will add the number to your blocked numbers list. From now on you will no longer receive calls from the blocked number.
To remove a phone number from the blocked list, press - to the right of a number on the list
Method 3 of 8: Using a Pixel or Nexus Android
Step 1. Open the Phone app
on your Android.
The Google Phone app is what most Pixel or Nexus phones use by default. This phone-shaped app is on the home screen.
Step 2. Press ⋮ at the top right corner of the 'Phone' screen
A drop-down menu will appear.
Step #3. Tap Settings from the drop-down menu
Step #4. Tap on Blocked Numbers near the top of the page
Step 5. Press ADD A NUMBER
This is at the top of the page.
Step 6. Enter the number you want to block
Tap the text field and then type the number you want to block.
You can also go to "Recent Calls" or "Call History" and tap on a number you want to block. Then press 'Block'
Step 7. Press BLOCK
This is below the text field. This will add the number to your blocked numbers list. You will no longer receive calls from the blocked number.
- You can also check the 'Report as scam' box to report the call.
- If you want to unblock a number, go to the 'Blocked numbers' list in the Settings menu, press 'X' next to a number you want to unblock and then press 'Unblock'.
Method 4 of 8: Block a number on an LG Android
Step 1. Open the Phone app
on your Android.
This is the phone-shaped app on the home screen, but it can also be among your other apps.
Step #2. Press the Call Logs tab
This is at the top or bottom of the screen.
Step #3. Press ⋮ at the top right corner of the screen
This will bring up a drop-down menu.
Step 4. Press Call Settings
This option is in the drop-down menu.
Step 5. Press Reject Call
It's under the "GENERAL" heading.
Step 6. Tap on Blocked Numbers
This option is near the top of the page.
Step 7. Press +
A window with options to block will appear.
Step 8. Press New Number
This will open a text field.
You can also tap "Contacts" to select a contact's number, or "Call Logs" to select a recent number. If you do this, the number will immediately be added to your blocked numbers list
Step 9. Enter a phone number
Tap the text field and then type the number you want to block.
Step 10. Hit Done below the text field
This will add the number to your blocked numbers list. Now you will no longer receive calls from this number.
Method 5 of 8: Using an HTC Android
Step #1. Open the People app on your Android
Tap the app with the icon that resembles a person's silhouette. This is usually on your Android home screen or among your other apps.
Step #2. Press ⋮ at the top right corner of the screen
A drop-down menu will appear.
Step #3. Press Manage Contacts
This option is in the drop-down menu.
Step #4. Tap on Blocked Contacts near the top of the page
Step 5. Press Add
This option is near the top of the page.
Step 6. Press Select from people or Add number.
If you want to select a contact to block, press 'Select from people'. If you want to enter a number to block, press 'Add number'.
Step 7. Tap the checkbox next to a contact or enter a number
If you're blocking a contact, tap the checkbox next to the contact you want to block. If you selected 'Add number', enter the number you want to block.
Step 8. Press Save
This will add the number to your blocked numbers list. You will no longer receive calls from this number.
Method 6 of 8: Block a number on a Microsoft phone
Step 1. Press Settings app
Its icon resembles a gear. It's either on your home screen or in the apps list that appears when you swipe to the right edge.
Step 2. Press Call+SMS Filter under the System heading
The first time you use this app, you will be asked to accept the terms of use. Press 'Accept' when prompted
Step #3. Hit the switch
This will enable call barring. Now you can block calls.
Step #4. Open the Phone app
This app has an icon that resembles a phone. It's on your home screen.
Step 5. Tap on Call History in Phone app
This will display a list of recent calls.
Step 6. Press and hold the number you want to block
This will display a menu above that number.
Step 7. Press Block Number
This will bring up a confirmation pop-up window.
Step 8. Press Ok
This will block the number.
You can only block numbers that are not stored in your address book
Method 7 of 8: Add your number to the registry to stop being called (for US)
Step 1. Open the DNC registry website
Go to
If you've already registered your number here, you don't have to do it again
Step 2. Click on Register your phone
It's a brown button on the right side of the page.
Step 3. Click on REGISTER HERE
This is in the middle of the page.
Step 4. Enter your phone number
Do this in the 'Phone number' text field in the middle of the page.
You can add up to three phone numbers at once (one per numeric field)
Step 5. Enter your email address twice
Enter your email address in the "Email address" text field and then again in the "Confirm email address" text field.
Step 6. Click SUBMIT under the last email text field
Step 7. Scroll down and click REGISTER
This is at the bottom of the page.
Step 8. Open your email address
Visit the website of the email address you used to register your phone and sign up if necessary. You should receive a verification email from the DNC registry within minutes.
Step 9. Open the email
Click on the email “National Do Not Call Registry – OPEN AND CLICK Link to Complete Your Registration” from the sender “Registry” to do so.
If you don't see this email within ten minutes, look for it in the "Spam" or "Junk" folder
Step 10. Click on the link
There is a link in the middle of the email; click it to verify your email address and add your phone number to the registry.
Method 8 of 8: Block calls on a landline
Step 1. Read the manual of your landline
Each landline is slightly different from other landlines, so you should be familiar with the specific features and operations of your landline.
- If you can't find the physical manual, you can probably find a copy of the manual for your phone model online.
- Most manuals have a chapter dedicated to call blocking, filtering, or something similar.
Step 2. Contact your carrier
Calls on a landline can only be blocked via the provider. To enable this, you need to contact your carrier and see what options are available.
Step 3. Sign up to reject anonymous calls
This feature makes it possible to reject private and blocked calls. This feature may cost a little extra, depending on your carrier.
Step 4. Add numbers to your blocked numbers list
Most carriers allow you to block specific numbers when you are being harassed by someone. The procedure varies depending on your carrier.
Step 5. See if your phone allows priority calls
This feature allows you to change the ringing sound of your phone for certain numbers, allowing you to decide whether or not to answer.
Tips
- If your number has been on the DNC registry for more than 31 days and you receive a spam call from a company, you can report the number on the DNC registry website.
- You can also block unknown numbers if you don't want to receive calls from private, unknown or restricted numbers.
