When you buy a new phone, it is usually "locked down" by the company you bought it from so that you can only use it on their network. This can be a problem when traveling abroad and want to avoid expensive roaming charges. Depending on your particular Nokia model, unlocking your device can usually be done in just a few steps.
Method 1 of 2: Unlock with an unlock code
Step 1. Contact your service provider
If you have been a customer for some time, they will usually give you a free unlock code. This is by far the best way to get your phone unlocked. After connecting to your carrier, follow their directions to unlock.
Step 2. Turn on your phone without a SIM card in it
Refer to the manual for information on how to remove the SIM card for your specific model. Enter your PIN if prompted. For newer models, simply insert a new SIM card and enter your unlock code. You can find this by simply using downloaded software. If you unlocked your device correctly, you will see "SIM throttling disabled" on your screen. If you are using an older model, continue to the next step.
Step 3. Enter the following code:
# PW + unlock code + 7#. Enter the
pby tapping * three times. Enter the
Wby tapping the * four times. Enter the
+by tapping * twice. If that code doesn't work, replace the "7" in the code with a "1."
Step 4. Unlock your Nokia device
If you have unlocked your phone correctly, "SIM Restriction Off" will appear on your screen.
Method 2 of 2: Unlock with software
Step 1. Download software to generate the unlock code
If you can't get your unlock code from your service provider, the software is available online for free. UnlockMe and Nokia Unlock Calculator are recommended options.
Step 2. Enter your information on their website
If you choose Nokia Unlock Calculator, enter your details and then select "Get unlock code" at the bottom of the page. After you have collected your personal unlock code, you can unlock your device.
Step 3. Insert a new SIM card into your phone
Once you've done this, key in your unique unlock code, then select "OK". If you have unlocked your phone correctly, "SIM Restriction Off" will appear on your screen.
- Most phones only allow you to try a certain number of unlock attempts, Nokia phones have a limit of 5 attempts. After that, the phone becomes "hard-locked", which means that it cannot be unlocked without using special equipment.
- Unlock codes are unique to the phone itself, don't try to use someone else's unlock code even if it's for the same model.
- Most new phones don't work with the codes generated by the free unlock programs.
- Try at your own risk to unlock your phone. While unlocking your phone is legal, some cell phone operators may choose to void your warranty if you unlock your phone.
