GIMP is an open-source image editing program and a great free alternative to Adobe Photoshop and other commercial programs. Like many other GNU GPL software, you can download it, use it and share it with others absolutely free, and you are allowed to change the source code. The name GIMP is short for "GNU Image Manipulation Program." Many of the powerful features of Photoshop and similar commercial programs are also available in the GIMP. Step 3. Answer the installer's questions

All default settings work fine, but users who want a little more control will need to follow these steps:

  • Click "Next" to confirm that no other applications are running. Software such as an Internet browser (eg this article) can remain open just fine. Applications that can interfere with the installation of GIMP are GTK+ programs and installers of other programs running at the same time.
  • Click "Next" to agree to the GNU GPL.
  • Click "Customize" for more control over your installation. You can now click on "Install now" for a standard installation. The bottom steps are about a custom installation.
  • Choose an installation folder, or leave it alone to choose "C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0" folder. Click "Next."
  • A full install will install everything needed for GIMP (including GTK+), but will not install the Python extension to GIMP. If you already have a version of GTK+ installed, or you want to make your own selection, choose "Custom installation" and then "Next."
  • The file associations are displayed with the default selections. This indicates which files are associated with GIMP, meaning that if you launch one of these files in the future, it will open with GIMP by default. Make the desired changes here and click "Next."
  • You will be asked whether to create a folder in the Start menu. So one in the Start menu at the section "Programs" or "All Programs"). Choose what you prefer, give it your own name and click "Next."
  • You will be asked if you would like a desktop link or a quick launch link. The quick launch link is placed in the quick launch toolbar. Make your choices and click "Next."
  • Review your settings in the next text box and click "Install."
