This article will teach you how to increase the download speed for games, movies and other items on your PlayStation 4. By using simple Wi-Fi tricks that work on almost all devices, you can improve your download speed a little bit. Diving into your settings and connecting to a different DNS server can make a big difference in your download speed.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: With common tricks

Step 1. Do not download more than one thing at a time
As with any console, the speed of each download will slow down if multiple downloads are running at the same time. The best speeds are obtained by downloading things – mainly games – one at a time.

Step 2. Do not play online while downloading
If you play online during a download you will not only suffer from lags, you will also make your download slower.

Step #3. Pause and resume your download
This is the download equivalent of restarting your computer. If your download is slow to start or continue, you can sometimes fix the problem by pausing the download and then resuming it.

Step 4. Check the terms of your internet contract
The problem may be with your internet connection, and not the console. If you have a download limit (eg 25 Mbps) your downloads may not get faster than they already are.
- Keep in mind that internet speeds are often expressed in mega bits per second, not mega bytes per second. There are eight megabits in a megabyte, so a 25 Mbps connection will give you a download speed of about 3 megabytes per second.
- Upgrading your internet contract or changing internet provider will most likely solve these problems.

Step 5. Check the limitations of your modem and router
Cheap modems and routers usually have limited capacity; the fact that you pay for a certain download speed does not mean that you will get it. If your modem has a lower bandwidth capacity than what your ISP provides, you may want to consider getting a better modem.

Step 6. Check that your Wi-Fi network is not overcrowded
If you try to download something while other devices on the network are busy - a computer, phone, or console - your downloads will slow down.
Try downloading when no one else is at home and no other devices are on the network to resolve this issue

Step 7. Use an Ethernet connection
Although the PS4 has a great wireless receiver, your internet speed will always improve if you connect the console directly to your modem or router. You need an Ethernet cable for this.
One end of the Ethernet cable goes into the square jack on the back of your PS4, and the other end goes into a similar jack on your modem or router, with the word "internet" next to it. The two ends of an Ethernet cable are the same

Step 8. Update your console for the latest firmware
You will automatically be notified to install the latest firmware when you connect your PS4 to the internet. Keeping the firmware up to date will optimize both your download speeds and the general functionality of your PS4.
Part 2 of 2: Adjusting the internet settings

Step #1. Open the settings
Scroll up on the main menu, then scroll right to the suitcase-shaped 'Settings' option. Now press X to open the settings.

Step 2. Select Network
This is near the "System Update" option.

Step 3. Select Set Up Internet Connection
This option is near the top of the Network menu.

Step 4. Choose the most suitable network option
Your options are:
- Use WiFi – Choose this option if your console connects wirelessly to the internet.
- Use a LAN cable – Choose this option if your console connects to the internet via an Ethernet cable.

Step 5. Select Custom
Here you can adjust the DNS or MTU settings yourself.
If you are on a Wi-Fi network, you now need to select the network you want to set up

Step 6. Select Automatic
The PS4 will now go through the complicated procedure itself.

Step 7. Select Do Not Set
This bypasses another manual option.

Step 8. Select Manual in the dialog box
This window comes immediately after the 'Do not set' window; here you can change the IP address of your DNS.

Step 9. Edit your DNS settings
Here you need to enter both a primary and secondary IP address for your DNS location. Popular alternatives include:
- Google - 8.8.8.8 (Primary); 8.8.4.4 (Secondary).
- OpenDNS - 208.67.222.222 (Primary); 208.67.220.220 (Secondary).
- Please check your spelling before continuing.

Step 10. Select Next
This is at the bottom of your screen.

Step 11. Select Automatic
It's at the top of the "MTU Settings" section.
Don't lower your PS4's MTU number; unlike in the past, this will no longer allow you to improve your PS4's download speed

Step 12. Select Do Not Use
It's at the top of the 'Proxy server' page.

Step 13. Try to download something
With the new DNS settings you should now be able to download faster than before.
