In this article, we'll show you how to merge two or more networks into one large network. Here you divide your download speed over two or more available internet connections, so that you can still browse at normal speed while you are working on large downloads or streaming for a long time.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Create a network bridge between a LAN connection and wireless connections (Windows)

Combine Two Internet Connections Step 1

Step 1. First, make sure you have a Wi-Fi adapter

You need at least one adapter, otherwise your computer cannot recognize more than one wireless network.

  • In most cases, you install a WiFi adapter simply by plugging the adapter into a USB port.
  • Once the WiFi adapter is installed, you can connect to another network by first clicking the WiFi icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, selecting a network you weren't already connected to, and then clicking 'Connect'. Now you should also remain connected to your current network.

Step 2. Hold the ⊞ Win-key pressed while pressing X press.

Now the Windows shortcut menu opens at the start button in the lower left corner of the screen.

You can also right-click the start button to open this menu

Step 5. Click Network and Sharing Center

This is at the top of the window.

Step 6. Hold down Ctrl and click on each active network

This way you select every network that you want to combine.

Active networks can be recognized by the 'X' in the corner of their icons

Step 7. Right click on a selected network

Now you will see a dropdown menu appear.

Combine Two Internet Connections Step 8

Step 8. Click on Network Bridge

You may need to confirm that you want to do this as an administrator. The selected networks should work together from now on and form one internet connection.

If you're not logged in as an administrator, you probably won't be able to merge the networks

Method 2 of 3: Using a router capable of load balancing

Combine Two Internet Connections Step 9

Step 1. Buy a router that is suitable for load balancing

With a load-balancing router, you can connect multiple modems to different networks in such a way that you get one combined connection.

A load-balancing router costs between 40 and 90 euros

Step 2. Connect the modems to your router

If you have two or more wireless networks with different modems, you can connect them to your load balancing router by plugging one end of the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on the modem and the other end into the square port on the back of your router..

Combine Two Internet Connections Step 11

Step 3. Install your router's drivers

Usually a disk with the drivers is included.

Step 4. Open your router's configuration page on your computer

The configuration page is usually accessible by going through the router setup. If you don't see an option with the name Configure, Properties or similar, refer to the user manual.

Step 8. Uncheck the "Enable Bandwidth Based Balance Routing" box

By checking this box and the previous box, your router can merge the different wireless networks into one network.

Step 9. Click OK

Step 10. Connect your computer to your load balancing router

The way this is done differs per router, but you should be able to select the network name of the router on your computer and then type in the password of the router (the password can be found on a sticker on the back or bottom of the router).

Combine Two Internet Connections Step 19

Step 11. Use the combined connection

After connecting your computer to the router you will notice that you have much faster internet.

Method 3 of 3: Using Speedify

Combine Two Internet Connections Step 20

Step 1. Understand that Speedify is a service that you have to pay for

You can try Speedify for free up to a download limit of one gigabyte, but if you want to continue using Speedify after that you will have to pay a monthly or annual fee.

In February 2017, the monthly fee for a subscription was $8.99. It is slightly cheaper per year: $49.99

Step 2. Make sure you have a USB WiFi adapter

By using a WiFi adapter you can connect to a second wireless network, while the connection to the current network remains.

Combine Two Internet Connections Step 22

Step 3. Open the Speedify download page

You can download the Speedify installation file here.

Combine Two Internet Connections Step 23

Step 4. Select your operating system

Now you have to choose mac or pc. After you have made your choice, the download will start automatically.

Under macOS Sierra, you can only create one wireless connection at a time. If you have an Apple computer, you must first download a Wi-Fi manager to continue with this method

Combine Two Internet Connections Step 24

Step 5. Double click on the Speedify installation file

You can find the file in your download folder or on your desktop.

You may need to grant Speedify access to your computer to continue

Combine Two Internet Connections Step 25

Step 6. Follow the instructions

Speedify will automatically download the latest version. After updating, the program will open.

Combine Two Internet Connections Step 26

Step 7. Check if the Speedify button is green

You will find this button in the middle of the window. If so, Speedify will automatically analyze and merge your internet connections.

  • If you want to upgrade your Speedify account you can do that by clicking the button Upgrade at the bottom of the window. You may need to disable the Speedify button first.
  • You must first create an account with Speedify in order to upgrade. You can do this from the app.

Tips

  • Speedify is the latest version of the 'Connectify Dispatch' program.
  • Merging your internet connections doesn't double your download speed, but it does increase your bandwidth (so you can download more without noticing the internet slowing down).
  • Try streaming a movie and downloading a large file at the same time with your combined connection to see how much your bandwidth has increased.
  • If you don't have another wireless network at your disposal, you can choose to set up your smartphone as a wireless hotspot, that way you can also create a combined network.
