This wikiHow teaches you how to adjust the settings of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) on a Windows or Mac computer, or on an iPhone or Android smartphone. To set up your VPN, you must first connect to a VPN. Most VPNs are not free and require a paid membership before you can connect.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: In Windows

Step 1. Open Start

Click on the icon that looks like a gear wheel at the bottom left of the Start window.

Step 3. Click

In the middle of the Settings screen.

Step 4. Click on VPN

This tab is located on the left side of the Network & Internet menu.

Step 5. Select a VPN

Click on the name of a VPN you want to set up.

Step 6. Click on Advanced Options

It's under the VPN you've selected. By clicking on this you open the page of the VPN.

If you are adding a VPN for the first time, click + Add VPN connection

Step 7. Click Edit

This option is in the middle of the page. This will open the VPN settings.

Step 8. Configure the VPN's information

Adjust the following information:

  • Connection name - The name of the VPN on your computer. In the Windows version of some countries you can choose from a number of predefined providers at VPN provider, but from the Netherlands you can only select Windows (built-in).
  • Server name or address - Change the VPN's server address.
  • VPN type - Change the VPN connection type.
  • Login Type - Select a new login name or password.
  • Username (optional) - If necessary, change the username you use to log into the VPN.
  • Password (optional) - If necessary, change the password you use to log into the VPN.

Step 9. Click on Save

This is located at the bottom of the page. Doing this saves and applies your VPN settings.

Method 2 of 4: In Mac

Step 1. Open the Apple menu

Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner of the screen. A selection menu appears.

Step 2. Click on System Preferences…

It's at the top of the Apple drop-down menu.

Step #3. Click on Network

This purple globe icon is located in the center of the System Preferences page.

Step 4. Select a VPN

Click on the name of the VPN in the leftmost column of the networks. The VPN settings appear on the right side of the screen.

  • If you're setting up a VPN for the first time, click at the bottom left of the network connections screen and select VPN from the Interface drop-down menu, then enter the VPN details.

Step 5. Configure your VPN

Change the following settings:

  • Configuration - Click on the drop-down menu at the top of the screen and choose another configuration type (for example, Default) from the drop-down menu.
  • Server address - Enter a new server address.
  • Account name - Change the account name you use for the VPN.

Step 6. Click Authentication Settings…

It's located under the Account Name.

Step 7. Configure the authentication settings

Change the following options:

  • User identity - Click the box to the left of the authentication option (for example, password), and then enter a name.
  • Machine Authentication - Select the machine authentication option of your VPN.

Step 8. Click OK

It's at the bottom of the Authentication Settings screen.

Step 9. Click Apply

This will save the VPN settings and apply them to your connection.

Method 3 of 4: On an iPhone

Step 1. Open

Click on the gray box with a gear on it. Usually you will find the Settings on the start screen.

Step 2. Scroll down and click

It's at the top of the Settings window.

Step #3. Scroll down and click on VPN

This is located at the bottom of the General window.

Step 4. Find your VPN connection

Find the name of your VPN connection in the list.

Step 5. Tap on ⓘ

It's to the right of the name of your VPN connection.

Step 6. Tap Edit

This is located in the top right corner of the screen.

Step 7. Configure your VPN's information

Change the following information:

  • Server - Enter the name of your VPN's new server address if it has changed.
  • External ID - Enter the name of your VPN's external ID.
  • User Authentication - Click this, select User name or Certificate to change the authentication method.
  • User name or Certificate - Enter the username or certificate to verify your VPN.
  • password - Enter your VPN's password (if necessary).

Step 8. Tap Done

It's in the top right corner of the screen. This will save your changes and update your VPN.

Method 4 of 4: On an Android

Step 1. Open your Android's Settings

This icon in the form of a gear (or slider) is located in the App-Drawer.

Step #2. Scroll down and tap on More

It's at the bottom of the "Wireless & Network" section.

Step 3. Press VPN

You can find this in the drop-down menu under the “Wireless and Network” title.

Step 4. Select a VPN

Tap the VPN you want to configure.

Step 5. Configure your VPN

Change the following information:

  • Name - Enter a new name for the VPN.
  • Type - Tap this option, then select a new connection type (for example PPTP).
  • Server address - Update the address of your VPN.
  • User name - Update your username.
  • password - Update your password.

Step 6. Press Save

This is located at the bottom right of your screen. This saves your changes and updates your VPN.
