Most of the locations you can find on Google Maps have been added by users. The Google Map Maker tool could previously be used to contribute to Google Maps. These features can now be used from within the regular Google Maps website and app. If you have a business account, you can add more information to your placemark from the Google My Business page.

Method 1 of 4: Using a web browser

Add Places to Google Maps Step 10

Log in to and find the address or place you want to add. If the place doesn't have an address, search for the nearest street, then drag the map to the place you're looking for.

Sometimes you can find the precise location more easily by switching to satellite view

Method 3 of 4: Add your business to Google Maps

Add Places to Google Maps Step 18

Step 1. Create an account with Google My Business

Launch a web browser and go to Google's My Business page. If you own the business, you can sign in with your personal Google account. If you prefer to keep the accounts separate, create a new account. Once you are logged in, click Start Now.

This also works on a mobile browser, or via the Google My Business app. Some advanced options may only be available on a computer

Step 6. Verify your business

You may need to verify your business before the new place can be found and viewed by other users. This may appear immediately after submitting the form. If it doesn't appear right away, sign in to your Google My Business account, choose the business you're verifying, and click Verify Now. Follow the instructions to complete the process.

  • Google verifies most businesses by postcard. After you have received this postcard in the mail, log in again and enter the unique code on Google My Business.
  • Some companies are given the option to receive a code by text message. If you don't see this option, the SMS option is not available for your company.
  • If you've already used the same account to verify your business website with Google Search Console, your business will be verified automatically.

Step 3. Provide the following information

You will now see a file with the following nine column headings: Store Code, Company Name, Address Line 1, Neighborhood, Country, Postal Code, Primary Phone Number, and Primary Category. List each business location in one row, and fill in the corresponding information below the headings. Google provides detailed information on the website, but here are some important tips:

  • Under store code you give each business location a unique ID. An easy way to generate good store codes is to give your locations a brand designation plus a sequential number (for example, "GOOG1" for your first location, "GOOG2" for the second location, and so on). Avoid using special characters and spaces.
  • For some fields a maximum of 60 characters applies, for other fields 80 characters.
  • If your zip code starts with a 0, make sure your spreadsheet program doesn't remove that character.
  • You can use the full name Nederland, or just NL.

Step 4. Import the file

Save the spreadsheet file and return to your browser. Go to the Google My Business location page. Click on the menu button with the three lines, click on Locations and then on 'select file'. Follow the instructions to fix any errors, review your data and click Apply if everything looks good.

Step 5. Verify

It's a good idea to wait at least an hour to make sure your changes have been made before starting the verification. When you're ready, click the blue verification button in the top right corner of your business locations page. Please fill in each field as completely as possible. It can take up to a week for the data to be processed.

  • If you're not sure what name to use for a place, check this page.
  • Google Maps does not show ATMs located in bank branches.
  • The Google Map Maker program has ended. All functionalities are transferred to Google Maps.
