This article will teach you how to open a torrent file. Torrent files are really just links to online information with which you can download one or more files. You need a program like BitTorrent for this. You can open torrent files on Windows, Mac, and Android, but unfortunately not on an iPhone or iPad.


Method 1 of 2: On a desktop computer

Step 1. Open the qBitTorrent website

Go to in your computer's web browser.

Step 2. Choose a download link

Click one of the following options, depending on your operating system:

  • Windows - Click 64-bit installer to the right of the "Mirror link" text in the Windows section.
  • Mac - Click DMG to the right of the "Mirror link" text in the Mac section.

Step 3. Double click on the downloaded installation file

You are now opening this file.

Step 4. Install qBitTorrent

Do the following, depending on your operating system:

  • Windows - Click Yes in the dialog box, then follow the instructions.
  • Mac - Drag the qBitTorrent icon to the 'Applications' folder, then follow the instructions. You may need to verify the file before installing qBitTorrent.

Step 5. Double click on your torrent file

The installation already has torrent files associated with qBitTorrent, so your torrent file will now open in qBitTorrent.

  • On a Mac, you may need to click the torrent file first, then click File, Open with, and finally on qBitTorrent in the selection menu.

Step 6. Click I Agree in the dialog box

Now the download window for your file opens.

The next time you open a file in qBitTorrent, you don't have to click 'I agree' again

Step 7. Choose a save location

Click the folder icon next to the 'Save in' text box, choose a folder and click Select folder. This is the folder where your torrent files will be stored.

  • On a Mac, click To elect instead of Select folder.

Step 8. Click OK

This is at the bottom of the window.

Step 9. View the files of the torrent

While downloading, you can already view the files by opening the destination folder.

The torrent folder has the same name as the torrent itself

Method 2 of 2: On Android

Step 1. Make sure you have a torrent file

Your torrent file should be in the folder Downloads on your Android.

Step 2. Download µTorrent

µTorrent is one of the most popular torrent apps for Android. You can download µTorrent like this:

  • Open the


    Google Play Store.

  • Tap the search bar.
  • Type utorrent.
  • Tap on µTorrent®- Torrent Downloader in the drop-down menu.
  • Tap on to install.

Step 3. Close the Google Play Store

To do this, click or tap your Android's Home button.

Step 4. Open your Android's file manager

This app is different for each device, but is usually called Files or File Manager. You can find this app in the app drawer.

Step 5. Choose a save location

Tap the location (eg. Internal memory) where you downloaded your torrent.

In some apps (e.g. the Samsung Files app) you can skip this step

Step 6. Tap on Downloads folder

It is next to the 'D' in the list of folders.

Step 7. Tap on your torrent file

This should be in the folder Downloads. The file will now open in µTorrent.

Step 8. Tap Allow twice in the dialog boxes

This way you give µTorrent access to files and the location of your phone. Your torrent files will now be downloaded.

Step 9. Wait for the download to finish

Once all files have been downloaded you can proceed.

Step 10. Open your torrent folder

Go back to the map Downloads in the file manager and tap your torrent's file (or folder) to open it.

You may not be able to open the file you downloaded on your Android
