This wikiHow teaches you how to find north in Google Maps on your computer. Because you can no longer rotate the map on a PC or Mac and view it from different angles, north is always at the top of the map. However, if you're using Street View to get a closer look at a location, you can always find north using the compass - the red tip of the compass needle always points north.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Using Street View

Find North on Google Maps on PC or Mac Step 1

Step 1. Go to https://maps.google.com with your web browser

You can open Google Maps with any web browser on your computer, including Safari, Edge, and Chrome.

Step #2. Find a location on the map

You can search for a location in the search bar in the top left corner, or in the bottom right corner on the icons of a + and click to zoom in and out.

To go to your current location, click the icon that looks like a gray target in the bottom right corner of the map. If you haven't already given Google Maps permission to use your location, you may need to do so now

Step 3. Drag and drop the orange human-shaped icon onto the map

In the bottom right corner of the map, look for the small orange icon shaped like a person, click on it, drag it to the location on the map you want to view and release the mouse button. You are now switching to Street View.

Street View is not available for all locations. To find out where to use Street View, click and hold the orange person-shaped icon anywhere on the map. You can release the mouse button and place the icon on the selected blue roads. If you place the icon somewhere and you don't switch to Street View, you know you can't view that location with Street View

Step 5. Look at the red end of the compass needle

Look for the compass icon in the lower right corner of Street View and see which direction the red end is pointing. Whichever direction you turn in Street View, the red dot automatically moves with it so that it always points north.

Step 3. Look north

When using Google Maps on your computer, the map orientation is always the same. North is at the top of the map and south at the bottom. Left is always west and east is always right. Something just above the location you're looking for is north of that location.
