Have you ever wanted to send someone a link but the link was a page long? Some URLs are exceptionally long and cumbersome. Fortunately, there are websites that allow you to shorten them so that you can more easily send them in an email or text message. Short URLs are especially useful when you want to share links with others via social media.

Step 4. Sign up with Bitly for more options

A free Bitly account gives you the ability to create unique links of your own, share across devices and websites, and track performance.

  • Customizing your shortened URL is easy. Create a new link and you'll be automatically taken to an edit tab, where you can change the last part of the link to a custom URL, then add a title if you want. If you want to use the editing function again, click on the tab with the pencil.
  • Bitly also allows users with a free account to copy and share shortened URLs. These features can be found at the top of the Edit Panel and next to any link you select on your personal user page.
  • Paid accounts allow users to create links with functionality specific to mobile devices. In addition, they have more extensive data analysis, you can "own" your URLs and create and manage marketing campaigns.

Method 2 of 3: Using TinyURL

Step 1. Visit the TinyURL website

To do this, go to tinyurl.com. You will see a welcome message as well as a number of text boxes in the middle of the page.

Step 2. Create a shortened URL

Type the original web address in the text box marked Enter a long URL to make tiny. Once you've copied and pasted the web address into the text box, click the Make TinyURL! button on the right. You will now be presented with a new screen with a shortened URL and an alternate preview version of that URL.

  • If your original URL contains errors (such as spaces), TinyURL will offer some corrected options after you hit the Make TinyURL! button.
  • You can customize the shortened URL with text that better reflects what the link in that link means. You do this by typing your text of choice in the text box titled Custom alias (optional) before clicking the Make TinyURL! button.

Step 3. Create a TinyURL button on your toolbar for even more convenience

This option places a button on your browser's left toolbar that allows you to speed up the creation of shortened URLs. To do this, click the Make Toolbar button in the menu on the left side of the main page. Now follow the instructions by dragging the indicated link to your toolbar. In this way you can create a shortened URL for the page you are currently visiting by clicking the toolbar button.

  • Your shortcut toolbar may not be visible depending on your preferences. To activate it, select View from your browser's main menu, then click the Toolbars menu to make it visible.
  • If you are unable to place the link on your toolbar, or if you prefer it to be saved as a bookmark, you can also drag the link to your favorites or place it in your bookmarks folder. This is useful if you want to use Bitly for business purposes.

Method 3 of 3: Using Google URL Shortener

Step 1. Go to Google URL Shortener

You can find it on goo.gl. Its setup isn't as slick as Bitly's, but it's adequate if you're just interested in shortening a URL.

Create Small URL Links Step 9

Step 2. Create a shortened URL

Start by copying and pasting the original link into the text box labeled Paste your long URL here. And then click the Shorten URL button on the right side. Google now makes a list of shortened URLs. You can hide any of the shortened URLs by checking the boxes next to them and then clicking the Hide button at the bottom of the list.

Create Small URL Links Step 10

Step 3. Track the performance of your links

You'll find a column in your shortened links list that tells you how many clicks each link has received. By clicking Details, Google will show you the information in an overview, with the performance of the links over time and along with the countries, browsers and platforms from which they were clicked.
