Instead of printing one PDF page per sheet of paper, you can also print multiple PDF pages on one sheet. This feature is also known as 'X-up' printing, where the 'X' stands for the number of pages you want to print per sheet. For example, 6-up printing is printing 6 PDF pages on one sheet. By putting multiple pages on a sheet, you print more efficiently and save paper.

Step 1. Click on 'Print'

To do this, go to 'File' and choose 'Print' in the drop-down menu. A new window will appear.

Step 2. Change the settings under 'Resize & Process Pages'

On the left you see the heading 'Resize and process pages'. Click on 'Multiple'.

In older versions of Adobe Reader, this is a separate menu called 'Scaling Pages'. In the drop-down menu you can choose 'Multiple pages per sheet'

Step 3. Choose the number of PDF pages per sheet of paper

After selecting 'Multiple' you can choose from a number of options via a drop-down menu (e.g. 4 or 6 pages per sheet). You can also enter a custom number yourself. Enter the desired number of pages per sheet.

Step 4. Set the page order

Open the 'Page Order' drop-down menu. You can choose from 4 options: Horizontal, Horizontal Inverse, Vertical or Vertical Inverse.

  • Horizontal means that the pages appear in rows from left to right on the sheet.
  • Horizontal inverse means that the pages appear in rows from right to left on the sheet.
  • Vertical means that the pages start at the top left. They then appear in columns from top to bottom on the sheet, with the columns going from left to right.
  • Vertically inverse means that the pages start at the top right. They then appear in columns from top to bottom on the sheet, with the columns going from right to left.

Step 5. Print the document

Click 'Print' at the bottom right to print the document. The document comes out of the printer.

Step 1. Copy the PDF page

The Organize Pages feature, which allows you to copy and organize your PDF pages, is not available in the free version of Adobe reader. If you only have the free version, you will need to copy the pages before converting your document to a PDF file. Copying pages via the 'Organize pages' function is as follows:

  • Click the 'Tools' tab and select 'Organize Pages'.

Open the 'Page Order' drop-down menu. You can choose from 4 options.

Step 1. Print on both sides in Windows

Double-sided printing allows you to print pages on both sides of the paper.

  • Go to 'File' and click on 'Print'.
  • Click on 'Properties'.
  • Go to 'Layout' and select 'Duplex printing'.
  • Click 'OK' and then 'Print' to print the document.

By printing double-sided, you use both sides of the sheet and save paper.

  • Go to 'File' and click on 'Print'.
  • Expand the Print dialog by pressing the blue square next to the 'Printer' box.

  • Locate the 'Double-sided' box and select 'Long Edge' from the drop-down menu.

Step 3. Print on both sides of a single-sided printer

Alternatively, if your printer cannot print double-sided, you can manually print your document on both sides.

  • Go to 'File' and click on 'Print'.
  • Go to 'Pages to Print'. Click on 'More options' and open the 'Odd or even pages' drop-down menu. Select 'Just Even Pages'.
  • Check the 'Reverse order of pages' box.
  • Click 'Print' to print the document.
  • Remove the printed sheets from the printer. If the document consists of an odd number of pages, you should add another blank page.
  • Place the stack of paper in the paper tray. The even pages should be at the bottom and the top of the page should face the printer (i.e. enter the printer first).
  • Go to File > Print > Pages to Print > More Options > Odd Pages Only > Reverse Order of Pages > Print.
