In Minecraft you need flint and steel to make a fire. The recipe is simple, but you need to know how to collect flints and melt iron. Listen to Smokey Bear before using the tool, or you'll start a forest fire that will wipe out your base for a moment.

Part 1 of 3: Collecting flint and iron ingots

Step 1. Look for gravel

Gravel is a light gray block that falls down when there is nothing underneath. You can find it in large bodies of water, on beaches and the paths in villages. If you're not around one of these places, dig a hole in the ground or search caves until you come across it.

Step 2. Break gravel until you get flint

About 1 in 10 gravel blocks drop a piece of flint instead of gravel when broken. A shovel allows you to search gravel much faster, and according to some players it increases the chance of finding flint.

A shovel requires a cobblestone and two sticks, plus a workbench. On the computer version, place it in a vertical column with the stone on top

Step 3. Mine iron

Iron is quite common underground, so you should not have to dig to find it. It looks like stone with beige spots. You need a stone pickaxe or better to dig it up.

Step 4. Melt the iron in a furnace

You cannot use iron ore until you have separated the iron from the rock. You do this as follows:

  • Build an oven with eight cobblestones and a workbench. (In the computer version, fill every square except the center.)
  • Use the furnace to open a remelting interface.
  • Place the iron ore in the top slot.
  • Place coal, wood or other combustible materials in the lower fuel slot. (This will be destroyed.)
  • Wait for the melting to finish.
  • Take the iron bar from the result slot on the right.

Step 1. Make flint and steel on the computer

If you're playing Minecraft on your computer or a console with advanced crafting enabled, place an iron bar and a piece of flint anywhere in the work grid. Drag flint and steel from the results box to your inventory.

If you are playing Minecraft 1.7.1 or earlier, you must place the flint exactly one square below and one square to the right of the iron bar

Step 2. Make Flint and Steel on the Console or Pocket Edition

On devices with simple crafting systems, select the flint and steel crafting recipe from the crafting window. You may need a workbench.

  • In the Minecraft Pocket Edition, Flint and Steel are only available in version 0.4.0 and later. You can only make fire in versions 0.7.0 and later.
  • All console versions feature flint and steel.

Part 3 of 3: Using flint and steel

Step 1. Protect yourself from fire

Before you set things on fire, you should learn how to keep your base from going up in flames:

  • Fire can spread to an empty block above a combustible surface. Fire can jump as far as one square down, to the side, or four squares up.
  • Solid barriers cannot prevent fire from spreading.
  • Water will extinguish fire.

Step 2. Light the fire

Place flint and steel in one of your quick slots and select it. You can now use the item in the same way as a loaded pickaxe or other tool. By using the item on a combustible object (such as wood or grass), you will be able to start a fire. By using it on a non-combustible object (such as rock), you can make a fire that only burns for a short time. Here are some ways to use fire:

  • As a temporary light source when you have few torches
  • Clearing a forest for a major construction project
  • Setting enemies on fire - they are combustible too! Creepers will explode, and most other mobs will gradually take damage.

Step 3. Detonate TNT

You may find TNT protecting a desert temple. You can also make it yourself by filling the work area with gunpowder and sand. After lighting it with flint and steel you have about 4 seconds to run before it explodes. To give yourself even more time, light a combustible block near the TNT and let the fire spread, indirectly igniting the TNT.

  • Flint and steel work well with netherrack. By right clicking on netherrack you can make a perpetual fire. Be careful not to get in it though! You can also build a fire pit with flint, steel and netherrack, and other non-combustible blocks, to keep the fire from spreading.
  • Some multiplayer servers block flint and steel to prevent players from setting fire to everything. If the recipe doesn't work, try again in a single-player world.

  • If you get into a fire, you will catch fire yourself. This will deal you damage as long as you linger in the burning block, and then for another 8 seconds (four hearts of health) after you exit it. Water will extinguish the flame.
  • There is a bug in the game that can sometimes cause TNT to disappear instead of exploding. This happens if you use it too often, or if you right click on the flint and steel along with the TNT.
  • Don't leave flint and steel loaded if you don't want to use it. Many houses have been burned down because someone right-clicked on a door to open it, accidentally setting it on fire.
