Potions are powerful items in Minecraft that allow you to achieve various positive and negative effects. To brew potions you need kitchen tools along with the ingredients as indicated in the recipes. See step 1 below to learn how to make potions and choose from different combinations.

Steps

Part 1 of 5: Gathering the supplies

Step 1. Make the brewing tools

You will need several tools to make potions along with a water source. You can make these tools with a workbench.

  • Brewing Stand – You will need this tool for brewing potions. These can be made by placing three Cobblestone Blocks in the bottom row of the Crafting Grid, along with a single Blaze Staff in the center of the Grid.
  • Cauldron – A cauldron isn't necessary for brewing potions, but can be useful for keeping water on hand while you're brewing the potion. Each cauldron can hold a bucket of water, which you can use to fill 3 more bottles. You can make a cauldron by placing 7 Iron Bars in the outer ring of the Crafting Grid, creating a U-shape.
  • Glass bottles – You need glass bottles to store a drink. You can sometimes get glass bottles by defeating witches or by fishing, or you can make them by placing 3 glass blocks in the Crafting grid, in the middle column. Making glass bottles makes 3 at a time.

Step 2. Collect Nether Wart for the base potions

Nether Wart is the basic ingredient for almost all potions in Minecraft. The only potion that does not enter Nether Wart is the Potion of Weakness.

  • Nether Wart grows in the Nether, and can be found in some Nether Forts, especially near stairwells.
  • Nether Wart can be planted in Soul Sand for cultivation. This is essential if you plan to make a lot of potions, and can save you a lot of time harvesting.

Step 3. Look for the other ingredients

Basic potions have no effect at all, you will have to add other ingredients to them to benefit. The ingredients you choose determine the effect of the potions.

  • Spider Eye – Left behind by spiders, cave spiders, and witches. Used for poison potions.
  • Glistering Melon – You can make a glittering melon by surrounding a melon with 8 gold nuggets in the Crafting grid. Used for health potions (instant health potions).
  • Golden Carrot – Can be made by surrounding a carrot with 8 gold nuggets in the Crafting grid. Used for night vision potions.
  • Blaze Powder - – Can be made by crafting a Blaze staff left by Blaze enemies. This will make 2 Blaze powders. Used for Power potions.
  • Fermented Spider Eye – Can be made with a spider eye, mushroom and sugar. Used for weakness potions.
  • Pufferfish – Can be caught by fishing. Used for potions that allow you to breathe underwater.
  • Magma Cream – Left behind by defeated Magma cubes. They can also be made by combining Blaze powder and a slime ball. Used for heat resistant potions.
  • Sugar – You can make this from a few pieces of Sugar Cane. Used for speed potions.
  • Ghast Tear – Left by Ghasts. Can be difficult to obtain as Ghasts often float over lava. Used for potions that restore your health.
  • Rabbit's Foot - Abandoned by defeated Rabbits. Used for jump potions. This is not yet available, but will be in Minecraft 1.8.

Step 4. Collect various modifiers

You can further customize a potion by adding another ingredient after it's made. This usually allows you to extend the amount of time a potion lasts. You can also make sure you can throw magic potions so that they shatter if they hit something.

  • Redstone – You can find Redstone by mining Redstone Ore. This usually gives you 4-5 blocks of Redstone. This will make the potions work longer.
  • Glowstone Dust - Can be obtained by breaking a Glowstone block. You can get up to 4 parts Glowstone Dust per Glowstone block. This will make the potions stronger, but shorter in duration.
  • Gun Powder – This can be found near defeated Creepers, Ghasts, and Witches. This makes potions that you can throw.
  • Fermented Spider Eye – This additional ingredient can also be used to modify potions. Usually this reverses the effect of a magic potion, or reduces its effect.

Part 2 of 5: Brewing basic potions

Step 1. Fill 3 water bottles

All potions start with a glass bottle filled with water. Fill 3 bottles with water from a water source. You can make 3 potions from a second ingredient, so keep it efficient and make 3 potions at the same time.

Step 2. Select the Brewing Standard

This will open the Brewing Grid. There is 1 box at the top, connected to 3 boxes below. Place the glass bottles with water in the bottom 3 compartments.

Step 3. Add Nether Wart to the potion to make an Awkward Potion

Place a Nether Wart in the top space of the Brewing Rooster. The brewing process will take approximately 20 seconds. Once the brew is complete, your bottles will be filled with Awkward Potions. The Awkward Potions do nothing yet, but are a basis for the actual potions.

If you're trying to make a Potion of Weakness, add one of the ingredients from the list in the previous section instead of Nether Wart to make a Mundane Potion. This is the basis of a Potion of Weakness. Add a Fermented Spider Eye instead of a Nether Wart to instantly create a Potion of Weakness, without needing a base potion

Part 3 of 5: Making Potions with Positive Effects
