How to Make Chainmail Armor in Minecraft: 8 Steps (with Pictures)

Chainmail armor cannot be made in the same way as the other armor types in Minecraft. You can get the different parts of the armor by defeating creatures wearing this armor, or you can earn them by trading with a villager who is a blacksmith. You can get chainmail armor in both survival mode and creative mode, without using any mods or cheats.

Method 1 of 2: Swap chainmail armor with a villager

Make Chain Armor in Minecraft Step 1

Step 1. Earn emeralds as a medium of exchange

You can buy chainmail armor from blacksmiths by trading it for emeralds. You can collect emeralds through barter with other villagers, or by mining them yourself.

  • Villagers are also willing to pay emeralds for items you have to offer. See what other villagers would like to buy. For example, a villager in a brown cloak will be willing to pay an emerald for a certain amount of wheat.
  • You can get emeralds by mining emerald ore, which you can usually find in Extreme Hill biomes. However, looking for emerald ore is done little and takes more time than bartering with villagers.
  • The price of the various pieces of chainmail armor varies. A Chainmail cap costs 5-6 Emeralds, a Chainmail Coat costs 11-14 Emeralds, Chainmail Pants costs 9-10 Emeralds and a pair of Chainmail Boots costs 5-6 Emeralds.

Step 2. In a village, find the house of an armor blacksmith

These villagers live in a forge with a lava pool on the porch, and wear black aprons. Only armor smiths sell chainmail armor.

Step 3. Open the Trading GUI screen

Right click on the villager to open the trade graphics user interface (GUI). Here you can see what the villager can sell to you. You have to check if the blacksmith has the title of armor blacksmith, which you can check at the top of the trading screen. Click on the left or right arrow to see what items the villager can sell to you and what you should give him in return.

  • The blacksmith can also be a Toolsmith or Gunsmith. These types of blacksmiths do not make chainmail armor.
  • If the village doesn't have a blacksmith who is a Harnesssmith, you can try to find another village.

Step 4. Trade with the armor smith

The armor smith may not sell chainmail. This depends on his rank, which determines what items he sells. In order for the armorer to start selling chainmail, you may need to buy other items from him so that he can rank higher.

If the armor smith doesn't sell chainmail pieces, you must buy the last item in his inventory. You do this by clicking the right arrow until you get to the last item in his inventory and buying it. Close the trading GUI screen. There is a chance that the armor smith will appear surrounded by a glow. This means he has been upgraded and may now be selling a piece of chainmail armor. Repeat the process until the chain mail pieces are sold

Method 2 of 2: Kill enemy mobs to get chainmail armor

Make Chain Armor in Minecraft Step 5

Step 1. Understand hostile mob farming

Farming is a method for the player to increase the chances of finding certain items, by means of using the way the game is set up for one's own gain. You can specifically hunt enemy mobs by attacking enemy mobs in areas where they usually appear. To do this, you'll need to create an environment suitable for cornering mobs in a central area, and allowing easy access to items dropped by the mob.

Step 2. Play the game on a higher difficulty

In Minecraft, how enemy mobs appear, and how damage is dealt to the player, are determined by the difficulty. Raising the game's difficulty increases the likelihood of enemies appearing complete with weapons and armor. In some cases they will also wear chainmail armor. An enemy mob is a type of non-player character (NPC) that will attack the player. The only enemy mobs that could be wearing chainmail armor when they appear are the zombies and the skeletons. The higher the difficulty, the more likely you are to encounter mobs wearing chainmail armor.

  • When playing in hardcore mode, the difficulty of the game cannot be changed.
  • Playing on a higher difficulty increases the chances of being killed by mobs or starving.
  • During the game, the difficulty level can be adjusted at any time. Once you've matched the pieces of the armor, you can lower the difficulty again.
  • Mobs don't wear armor when playing the game on the Peaceful or Easy difficulty.

Step 3. Set up enemy mob farming traps

Hostile mob farming also involves setting traps where they usually appear. An example is creating a canal, using water element blocks, that transports mobs to a centrally located spot or moat, making it easier for you to attack them without them attacking you. Enemy mobs appear in the dark, so you'll need a darkroom for them to appear in. Such a room can be made from blocks in the world, or by digging a mine shaft.

  • Try to create a place where the mob can't fight back, such as by surrounding slab blocks with standard-sized blocks that impede further movement. Mobs can't crawl under holes, making them easier to attack.
  • A monster spawner will make mobs appear every so often, which can be very beneficial for you when farming because you know exactly where the mobs will appear. Monster spawners for zombies and skeletons appear in underground dungeons. You create a trap around a monster spawner by lighting the area around with torches and also placing torches on the spawner itself so that mobs don't appear because of the light. Once you've set the trap, you'll need to remove the torches to make the mobs appear.
  • Skeletons and zombies will not fall from high things. You can place blocks like signs along edges, as they will treat them as blocks to stand on, then fall under. Be careful about using boards as part of your traps, as they can also act as a barrier to element blocks such as water.

Step 4. Kill a mob wearing chainmail armor

If you come across a zombie or skeleton wearing this type of armor, you must use your weapons to kill him. There is a small chance (~5%) that once he is defeated, he will drop the piece of armor. Run over the piece of armor to pick it up. If he doesn't drop a piece of armor, repeat the process until you've collected all the pieces of armor.

  • You repair any piece of chainmail armor by placing it on an Anvil along with an Iron Bar.
  • The chainmail armor in Minecraft can only be obtained through commands, mobs, treasure chests, the creative mode, or villagers.
