An Xbox device uses a laser to read data from the discs. If the disc is scratched, the laser will not be able to read the disc properly, in some cases you will not be able to play your game at all. You can try to repair a scratched Xbox game by filling the scratches with different substances.

Part 1 of 3: Assessing the damage to the drive

Step 1. Find the scratch

If you see an even scratch around the disc, your Xbox is probably the culprit.

If you have a relatively new Xbox or the scratches are frequent, contact Microsoft to see if they can replace the drive. With devices that show this defect, you can often get the money back for the games

Step 2. Check carefully that the protective plastic layer has not come off and check for cracks

These problems cannot be repaired.

Discard discs with these problems. The problems are probably caused by the disc not being properly stored

Part 2 of 3: Toothpaste method

Step 1. Buy regular toothpaste

It should be just paste, not gel or striped toothpaste, and not whitening toothpaste.

Step 2. Take a soft cloth

A lint-free cloth works best, although you can also use a piece of soft toilet paper.

Step 3. Apply some toothpaste to your cloth

Step 4. Spread the toothpaste evenly over the disc with the cloth

Do that in straight lines from left to right, not in a circular motion.

  • The straight lines will flatten the disc more evenly. The toothpaste will very lightly sand off the top layer, so that scratches are reduced.

Step 5. Leave the toothpaste on the disc for ten minutes

Step 6. Rinse the toothpaste off the disc under running water

Step 7. Pat the disc dry with a clean cloth

Try the disc in your Xbox.

If the disc still doesn't play properly, try this method again before trying another method

Part 3 of 3: Lip balm method

Step 1. Clean the disc surface with water

Dry the disc with a soft cloth.

Step 2. Apply wax-based lip balm to the surface of the disc in straight lines

Do not do this in a circular motion.

Lip balm is an inexpensive way to fill in scratches with wax. Use lip balm that does not contain other ingredients such as glitter or colors

Step 3. Use one side of the cloth to rub the lip balm in straight lines

Also, don't do this in a circular motion.

Step 4. Use the other side of the cloth, or a clean cloth, to wipe the disc

Most of the wax should be removed before you put the disc back in your Xbox.

A disc with too much wax can irreparably damage your device

Step 5. Try the game

If necessary, repeat the steps again before calling in professional help.

  • Borrow a friend's game and install it on your Xbox before using your own version. This could mean that your Xbox has already stored certain information that can no longer be retrieved from your drive.
  • The methods described in this article use inexpensive household products. If you'd rather not experiment on your own, find a professional repair company.
  • Blow on the disc and wipe it with a soft cloth.
