Method 1 of 4: Getting a Dratini through the Master's Quiz
Step 1. Enter the Dragon's Den behind Blackthorn City
Go through the cave entrance, down the ladder and towards the water's edge.
- Make sure you have a spot on your Pokémon team for Dratini.
- You must have already defeated the last Gym Leader in the area, Clair. She will give you a TM. You need this TM to enter the Dragon's Den for Dratini.
Step 2. Use your Pokémon's Whirlpool ability to get past a vortex
You can find the whirlpool by heading southwest from where you entered the water. You will see it between a rock and a cliff, on the west side of the pool.
Step 3. Surf the water until you see a house
You can find the house by crossing the water and heading in a southeasterly direction from the whirlpool.
Step 4. Enter the house
This is the Dragon Shrine.
Save the game before continuing so that if you receive a Dratini you don't want, you can try again
Step 5. Talk to the Elder
Answer his questions by saying that your Pokémon will respect and befriend them. If you answer all of his questions with respecting and befriending Pokémon, you'll get a Dratini with the "Extreme Speed" ability. Otherwise, you'll get a Dratini with the "Learn" skill.
- Dratini's strongest point is his attack and his weakest is HP (Hit Points)
- Dratini is a Dragon-type Pokémon and is vulnerable to Dragon, Ice, and Fairy.
- Dratini has the Shed Skin ability. Shed Skin overrides any Status Effects imposed on Dratini.
Method 2 of 4: Catching a Dratini in Dragon's Den
Step 1. Enter the Dragon's Den behind Blackthorn City
After going through the cave entrance, you need to go down the ladder and walk to the edge of the water.
Step 2. Surf the water until you meet a Dratini
The Dratini here are of a very low level (between level 5 and 15) and you only have a 10% chance of encountering one. You can also try fishing with a Good Rod or Super Rod, where the chance of catching a Dratini is 10-30%.
Step 3. Use Ultra Balls or Love Balls to catch Dratini
Ultra Balls are the best (besides the Master Ball) for catching Pokémon. Dratinis are annoyingly tricky to catch and Ultra Balls will likely reduce the time it takes. You use Love Balls for the opposite sex.
For example, if your Pokémon is a boy and the Dratini is female, the Love Ball will be more effective

Step 1. Go to Goldenrod City
Step 2. Go to the Goldenrod City Game Corner
Step 3. Talk to the man standing in front of the green game table
Step 4. Play the game until you win 2,100 coins
Step 5. Talk to the old man in the left corner
Step 6. Buy a Dratini with your tickets
Method 4 of 4: Catching a Dratini in the Safari Zone
Step 1. Enter the Safari Zone along Route 48
To enter the Safari Zone, you must first unlock the storyline that begins in Olivine City.
Step 2. Go to the swamp area
You have the option to move the areas so that you enter the swamp area first. The first time you enter the Safari Zone, you will be given a quest to find a Geodude. The second task is to use the Area Customizer and then find a Sandshrew.
Step 3. Use a Good Rod or Super Rod in water
If you fish for Dratini in the swamp area in the Safari Zone, you have a 20% chance of catching one.
Step 4. Use Ultra Balls or Love Balls to catch Dratini
