Below are the different Generations of Pokémon games that Pichu appears in:
Generation II - Gold, Silver, Crystal
Generation III - Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen
Generation IV - Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver
Generation V - Black, White, Black 2, White 2
Generation VI - X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire
Pichu is the unevolved version of Pikachu, and was first introduced in the Generation II Pokémon games. Unlike most Pokémon, Pichu does not evolve based on its level. Instead, Pichu evolves once its Friendship rating is at 220 out of 255. There are several ways you can increase your Friendship. Use the button to your right to go directly to your game.
Method 1 of 4: Generation II
Step 1. Try to catch Pichu with a Friend Ball
This is a special Poké Ball that sets the default Friendship of the Pokémon trapped in it to 200, instead of the usual 70. Since Pichu evolves when Friendship is at 220, if you catch the Pichu with a Friend Ball, you don't have to. not much to do to get him to that level.
You can get Friend Balls from Kurt in Azalea Town, if you bring him Green Apricorns
Step 2. Keep Pichu on your team
Every time you take 512 steps in the game, you gain 1 Friendship point. This is one of the easier ways to earn passive friendship.
Step 3. Have Pichu haircut by the Haircut Brothers
You can find the Haircut Brothers in Goldenrod Tunnel. The youngest brother gives the biggest boost (up to 10 Friendship per haircut). You can only get a haircut once every 24 hours.
Step 4. Let Daisy take care of Pichu
You can find Daisy Oak in Pallet Town between 3 and 4 PM. By letting Daisy take care of Pichu you get 3 Friendship.
Step 5. Give your Pichu 'Vitamins'
There are multiple items in the game that are considered Vitamins. Every time you feed Pichu one of these things, you will gain 3 to 5 Friendship:
- HP Up
- PP Up
- Weird Candy
Step 6. Level up Pichu
Pichu will gain Friendship every time he levels up. If Pichu has less than 100 Friendship, he gains 5 per level. If he is in between 100 and 200 he will get 3 more each time. Above 200 you get 2 Friendship per level.
Step 7. Challenge a Gym Leader with Pichu on your team
Challenging a Gym Leader or member of the Elite Four while Pichu is on your team will give Pichu a small boost of 1-3 Friendship.
Step 8. Prevent fainting
If Pichu faints during battle, you lose 1 Friendship. Make sure to switch Pichu with another Pokémon if it looks like it's about to pass out. However, do not use drugs (more on that in the next step).
Step 9. Do not give Pichu any medicines
If Pichu's life is low, you should try to avoid giving him drugs, including Energy Powder (-5 Friendship), Heal Powder (-5 Friendship), Energy Root (-10 Friendship), or Revival Herb (-15 Friendship).
Do all the healing and restoring in a Pokémon Center, which will have no effect on your Friendship
Step 10. Check Pichu's Friendship level
There is no number that indicates Pichu's Friendship. Make sure that Pichu is the first Pokémon on your team. You can find the woman who can see the Friendship level east of Goldenrod City Department Store. What she says depends on the level of Pichu's Friendship:
- 50 - 99: 'You should treat it better. It's not used to you.”
- 100 - 149: "It's quite cute."
- 150 - 199: 'It's friendly toward you. Sort of happy.”
- 200 - 249: 'I get the feeling it really trusts you.'
- 250 - 255: 'It looks really happy! It must love you a lot.”
Step 11. Level up Pichu as soon as you guess his Friendship is about 220
Pichu's Friendship must be 220 or higher before it can evolve. The Friendship Inquirer won't tell you when you've reached 220, so you'll have to guess a bit. You can level up Pichu by fighting or by giving him Rare Candy.
If Pichu doesn't evolve, his Friendship isn't on 220 yet. Remember that the Friendship researcher says the same sentence between 200 – 249. Therefore, you'll have to guess a little bit about your actual Friendship level
Method 2 of 4: Generation III
Step 1. Catch Pichu in a Luxury Ball
A Luxury Ball gives an extra bonus point for any activity that boosts Friendship. You can buy Luxury Balls in most stores.
Step 2. Give Pichu a Soothe Bell
When Pichu holds this item, for every activity that boosts Friendship, he gets an extra Friend point. This adds to the effect of the Luxury Ball, which means that if you use both Pichu, every time you do an activity that boosts Friendship, you get 2 extra points.
You can find a Soothe Bell in the Pokémon Fan Club
Step 3. Take 256 steps with Pichu on your team
The walking requirements for gaining Friendship were halved for Generation III, meaning you get a point for every 256 steps. This makes up for the lack of grooming options in the Generation III games.
Step 4. Use Vitamin items to get a boost
Vitamin items give you a boost of 2 - 5 points, depending on your current Friendship level (the higher Friendship is, the lower the boost). Vitamins include all Generation II vitamins, as well as the following additions:
- PP Max
Step 5. Level up Pichu to gain Friendship
If Pichu has less than 100 Friendship, every time he levels up, he gets a boost of 5 points. This will be reduced to a boost of 3 points above 100 and a boost of 2 points above 200.
Step 6. Give Pichu some EV-lowering berries
If you're intensively involved in EV training, you may be using EV berries on a regular basis. All EV-lowering berries will boost you by 2 points. These include:
Step 7. Try to avoid shutdown
If Pichu faints during the fight, he loses a Friendship point. Swap Pichu with another Pokémon if it looks like Pichu will be knocked out soon. Also, do not use any medicines (see next step).
Step 8. Do not give Pichu any medicines
Drugs have the biggest negative effect on Friendship of the entire game. Do all the healing and recovery at a Pokémon Center.
- Energy Powder: -5 points
- Heal Powder: -5 points
- Energy Root: -10 points
- Revival Herb: -15 points
Step 9. Check Pichu's Friendship level
Although you can't see an exact number that indicates the Friendship level, you can talk to a special character who can check your Friendship. This will give you a rough idea of your current level. You can find her in Verdanturf Town, in the house in the bottom left corner. If you notice that Pichu is the first Pokémon on your team, depending on your Friendship level, it will say a certain phrase.
- 50 - 99: 'It's not very used to you yet. It neither loves nor hates you.”
- 100 - 149: 'It's getting used to you. It seems to believe in you.”
- 150 - 199: 'It likes you quite a lot. It seems to want to be baby a little.’
- 200 - 254: 'It seems to be very happy. It obviously likes you a whole lot.'
- 255: "It adores you. It can't possibly love you any more. I even feel happy seeing it.”
Step 10. Level up Pichu as soon as you think his Friendship is at 220
If Pichu's Friendship is 220 or higher, when he levels up he will evolve into Pikachu. If Pichu doesn't evolve, that means his Friendship hasn't reached a high enough level yet.
Method 3 of 4: Generation IV and V
Follow the rules about Friendship for Generation II when playing HeartGold or SoulSilver.
Step 1. Catch Pichu in a Luxury Ball and give him a Soothe Bell
Just like in Generation III, these things will give your Pichu a Friendship boost. However, they work in a slightly different way with Generation IV. The Luxury Ball only gives a bonus when leveling up, and the Soothe Bell will boost all Friendship activities by 50%.
Step 2. Walk with Pichu in your team
Just like in Generation III, you get 1 Friendship for every 256 steps. You get a bonus if your Pichu is in a Luxury Ball.
Step 3. Get your Pichu massaged
There are a number of different massage locations that can give you a Friendship boost. You can only get a massage once every 24 hours.
- Diamond, Pearl, Platinum – The masseuse in Veilstone City will give you a 3 point boost.
- Diamond, Pearl, Platinum – A massage in the Ribbon Syndicate will give you a boost of 20(!) points, if your Friendship is less than 100.
- Black and White – A massage from the woman in Castelia Street can earn you up to 30 Friendship Points.
- Black 2 and White 2 – The masseuse is in the Medal Office and gives the same bonuses as those in Black and White.
Step 4. Use Vitamins to get Friendship with it
As in the previous Generations, Vitamin items will give you a big Friendship boost. No new Vitamins were introduced in Generation IV or V.
Step 5. Level up Pichu for a Friendship boost
You get a few Friendship points every time Pichu levels up.
Step 6. Use EV Lowering Berries
EV lowering berries give you a big Friendship boost. Feed your Pichu Pomeg, Kelpsy, Qualot, Hondew, Grepa, or Tamato berries for a boost of up to 10 Friendship, depending on the current Friendship level.
Step 7. Make sure that Pichu is not disabled
As in all other Generations, elimination will cause Pichu's Friendship to drop by 1 point. Replace Pichu with another Pokémon if it looks like it might pass out.
Step 8. Do not give Pichu any medicines
Drugs have a major negative effect on your Friendship and it can take a while to make up for the loss. Avoid the following and do all healing at a Pokémon Center instead:
- Energy Powder: -5 points
- Heal Powder: -5 points
- Energy Root: -10 points
- Revival Herb: -15 points
Step 9. Check your Pichu's Friendship (Generation IV)
If you're playing the Generation IV games, you can check Pichu's satisfaction by visiting the Pokémon Fan Club in Hearthome City. Note that Pichu is the first Pokémon on your team. Which phrase the control person says will depend on Pichu's Friendship level, and the phrases are different in Platinum.
- 50 - 99: 'You should treat it better. It's not used to you.” (D, P) “It's feeling neutral toward you. It's up to you to change that.” (Flat)
- 100 - 149: 'It's quite cute.' (D, P) 'It's warming up to you. That's my impression.' (Flat)
- 150 - 199: 'It's friendly towards you. It looks sort of happy.” (D, P) “It's quite friendly to you. It must be happy being with you.' (Flat)
- 200 - 254: 'I get the feeling that it really trusts you.' (D, P) 'It's very friendly toward you. I can tell you treat it kindly.” (Flat)
- 255: "It looks really happy! It must love you a lot.” (D, P) “It simply adores you! Why, I feel like I am intruding!' (Flat)
Step 10. Check your Pichu's (Generation V) Friendship
If you're playing the Generation V games, you can find the Friendship checker in the Pokémon Fan Club in Icirrus City. The sentence will change based on Pichu's Friendship level:
- 70 - 99: ‘The relationship is neither good nor bad… It looks neutral.’
- 100 - 149: "It's a little friendly to you… That's what I'm getting."
- 150 - 194: 'It's friendly to you. It must be happy with you.”
- 195 - 254: 'It's quite friendly to you! You must be a kind person!'
- 255: 'It's super friendly to you! I'm a bit jealous!'
Step 11. Level up Pichu as soon as you suspect his Friendship level is 220 or higher
Since you won't know the exact number without checking it every time you increase your Friendship, you will have to take a guess based on the phrase and the activities you do. If you level up Pichu when his Friendship is at 220 or higher, he will instantly evolve into Pikachu.
If Pichu doesn't evolve when his level is raised, that means his Friendship hasn't reached 220 yet
Method 4 of 4: Generation VI
Step 1. Catch the Pichu in a Luxury Ball
As in all previous Generations, a Luxury Ball gives bonus value to Friendship you get for certain activities.
Step 2. Do Friendship-boosting activities where you caught Pichu
A new addition to Generation VI's Friendship, is the bonus you get for doing Friendship-boosting activities in the same spot you caught Pichu.
This applies to the use of Vitamins, Rare Sodas and EV-lowering berries
Step 3. Walk with Pichu on your team
You can get 2 Friendship points by taking 128 steps. However, in Generation VI games, you get these points less than 50% of the time.
Step 4. Take your Pichu for a Massage
In X and Y you can find the masseuse in the house to the left of the Pokémon Center in Cyllage City. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, you can find a caretaker north of the Poke Miles store in Mauville City.
There is a 6% chance that massages will give you a 30 point boost
Step 5. Use Vitamins
As in all Pokémon games, Vitamins give a boost of up to 5 points (plus possible bonuses) to your Friendship. No new Vitamins have been introduced since Generation III.
Step 6. Use Wings to get a little boost
Wings are items similar to Vitamins but slightly less powerful. They can be found anywhere on the Driftveil Drawbridge and the Marvelous Bridge. Wings can give you a maximum of 3 Friendship.
Step 7. Level up Pichu by fighting
As Pichu's level increases in battle, you gain up to 5 Friendships. In Generation VI, levels obtained with Rare Candy are not awarded a Friendship Bonus.
Step 8. Give Pichu Super Training
Use the Super Training feature in Generation VI to boost Pichu's Friendship. You will need to complete a number of Regimens to unlock the Soothing Bag, which can boost your Friendship by 20 points.
Step 9. Drink fruit juices from the Juice Shoppe
The Juice Shoppe in Lumiose City sells a variety of different fruit juices, and a few of these will increase your Friendship. You will need berries to make the fruit juices.
- Rare Soda - 1 Lansat and 1 Starf Berry
- Colorful Shake – Two random berries
- Ultra Rare Soda - 1 Roseli and 1 Enigma
- Any kind of colored fruit juice
Step 10. Prevent Pichu from being disabled
Elimination will lower your Friendship by 1 point, so be sure to pull back Pichu if he's about to pass out. Do not give Pichu any medicines.
Step 11. Avoid drugs
The drugs in the game can have a major negative effect on your Friendship. Do all the healing in the Pokémon Center. The second value below applies if your Friendship is above 200.
- Energy Powder: -5/-10 points
- Heal Powder: -5/-10 points
- Energy Root: -10/-15 points
- Revival Herb: -15/-20 points
Step 12. Check the level of your Friendship
You can get an estimate of your Pichu's Friendship level by visiting the checker at the Pokémon Fan Club in Laverre City. Make sure that Pichu is the first Pokémon on your team. Read the Generation III instructions when playing Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.
- 50 - 99: 'Hmm…I think you have a lot of time ahead of you to get to know one another better.'
- 100 - 149: "It's a little bit friendly to you… Something like that."
- 150 - 199: "Well, I think you and Pichu will be an even greater combo someday!"
- 200 - 254: 'You must really like your Pichu and always keep it by your side!'
- 255: "It's amazingly friendly toward you! It must be so happy spending every day with you!'
Step 13. Level up Pichu as soon as you suspect he has reached 220 Friendship
You will have to gamble as the checker will only tell you which category you are in. You can level up Pichu by fighting, or by using Rare Candy, Rare Soda, or Ultra Rare Soda.
