Referring to a specific time in a YouTube video

This article will show you how to refer someone to a specific point in a YouTube video. This is done by adding an extension to the URL, which makes the video start exactly where you want it. Unfortunately this does not work on mobile devices.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Pausing the video

Step 1. Go to YouTube

Go to the page of the video you want to refer people to.

Step 2. Pause the video at the appropriate point

Pause the video at the point you want to reference. In the lower left corner of the video player you should see the timer. In this example it is '0:11/2:36'.

Method 2 of 4: Copy the URL

Step 1. Right click in the video image

A drop-down menu will appear containing a list of available options.

Step 2. Click on 'Copy Video URL from Current Time'

This will copy a link to a specific time in the video to your clipboard.

Step 3. Paste the URL

Every time someone clicks the link, the video will start the moment you paused and copied the video URL.

Method 3 of 4: Use the 'Share' button

Step 1. Click on the 'Share' button below the video

The Share button is next to an icon that looks like three dots in a triangle shape connected by lines.

Step 2. Enter the desired time

Below the link to the video and below the various social media icons, see an input field immediately to the right of 'From'. By default, the time when you paused the video appears there. But if you want to change the time, just click in the field and enter a different time. For example, if you wanted to link to “2 minutes and 30 seconds,” enter “2:30.”

Check the box to the left of "From" to automatically add the link to the correct time to the URL

Step 3. Copy the link

Double-click the link to highlight it. Then right click on the highlighted text and choose 'Copy' or press Ctrl+C.

Step 4. Copy and paste the URL

Every time someone clicks on the link, they are immediately directed to the desired time in the video.

Method 4 of 4: Link time in YouTube comments

Step 1. Link to a specific moment in a comment

This only works if you comment on a YouTube video in a place owned by Google, such as YouTube itself or Google+. Simply add the time in 'minutes:seconds' format. For example, "2:43" links to "2 minutes 43 seconds" in the video you're responding to.

• When the comment is posted, it will automatically link to that moment (2 minutes and 43 seconds) in the video you're commenting on. The link's label is simply '2:43'. So you can say to someone, “Listen to 2:43 to hear what I mean”. Unfortunately, this doesn't work in Facebook comments.
