This wikiHow teaches you how to remove the back cover from a Samsung Galaxy phone. This task is part of an advanced repair technique and can damage your phone or even make it permanently unusable. Removing the back cover from your Samsung Galaxy phone will void your warranty. If your phone is still under warranty and needs repair, you should call Samsung Customer Service or take the phone to the authorized retailer where you purchased the phone for repair by professional technicians.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Samsung Galaxy S6 and S7

Step 1. Remove the case from your phone if necessary
If your Samsung Galaxy has a case, you will need to remove it before continuing.

Step 2. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy
To do this, press and hold the lock key, tap Switch off in the pop-up menu and tap Switch off when you are asked to confirm your choice.
You risk causing a short circuit or receiving a shock if you take the back of the phone off while it is on

Step 3. Remove all SIM and SD cards
This is not mandatory, but is recommended to ensure that the heat applied to the phone does not damage the SIM and microSD cards, if any.
Use a SIM card eject tool and push it into the corresponding hole on the left side on top of the phone. This will eject the card reader with the phone's SIM and microSD card slots

Step 4. Place the phone face down on a soft surface
This is to avoid scratching the screen while removing the back cover.
For example, you can place a towel or placemat on a table

Step 5. Apply heat to the back of the Samsung Galaxy
You will need to do this for about two minutes. The best way to do this is by using a hair dryer or heat gun, but you should avoid heating one specific spot for more than a second at a time. This will loosen the adhesive that adheres the back of the Samsung Galaxy's case to the phone's frame.
- To avoid damaging the phone, point the heat gun at the back of the phone and quickly move it up and down in a zigzag motion.
- Alternatively, you can use a microwave heating pad made specifically for this task.

Step 6. Insert a spudger into the joint of the housing
There should be a gap where the front and back of the Galaxy case meet; this is where you insert a spudger, flathead screwdriver, credit card, or similar flat object.
The goal is to pry the back of the case from the front, but not quite yet

Step 7. Using a thin, flat tool, move up the left or right side of the phone
For example, you can use a guitar pick or a credit card. Doing this should cause the back of the phone to separate a bit from the front of the case.
Make sure that the item you are using here is not metal, as a metal item can scratch or otherwise damage the phone

Step 8. Pull up the pry tool on the other side of the phone
This will disconnect the bottom of the back of the phone case, as well as the left and right sides, from the front of the phone case.
You can apply more heat if needed

Step 9. Pry up the back of the phone, then pull it away
The last glue should come off when you do this, as only the glue on the top of the phone will hold the back of the phone in place.
- You can apply more heat and/or slide your pry tool along the top of the phone to make this process easier.
- Place the back of the phone in a warm, dry place so as not to damage the internal parts of the phone when you put it back.
Method 2 of 2: Samsung Galaxy S to S5

Step 1. Remove the case from your phone if necessary
If your Samsung Galaxy has a case, you will need to remove it before continuing.

Step 2. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy
To do this, press and hold the lock key, tap Switch off in the pop-up menu and tap Switch off (or, in some cases OK) when prompted to confirm your selection.
You run the risk of shorting your phone or receiving a shock if you take the back cover off while the phone is turned on

Step 3. Place your phone face down on a soft surface
This is to prevent scratches on the screen while you remove the back cover.
For example, you can put a towel on a table

Step 4. Locate the back cover removal slot
Depending on the model of your phone, the location of this slot will vary slightly:
- S4 and S5 - Top left corner of the back cover.
- S2 and S3 - Top of the back.
- s - Bottom of the back.

Step 5. Insert one of your fingernails into the slot
You can also use a small flat head screwdriver, guitar pick, or similar slim object, as long as you do it carefully.

Step 6. Gently pry the back of the phone towards you
It should come off the phone.

Step 7. Pull the back of the phone
Once you've secured the cover, pull it away from the phone to access the battery and SIM card.
