Step 1. Play music at a fast tempo to stay in a good mood

Before you start, find an album or playlist that gives you energy. Fast-paced music helps you get motivated to clean. Don't choose slow, gloomy music, because that can make you tired and bored.

Tip: if you don't know what music you want to listen to, search the internet for a quick music playlist. Spotify, Apple Music, and Pandora have a ton of playlists that motivate you and are great for cleaning.

Step 2. Come up with a reward for yourself so that you have a good reason to finish the job

This extra motivation can help you get the job done faster. Think about how you want to reward yourself when you finish cleaning and tidying up. You could go see your friends, watch a movie with your family, eat a big bowl of ice cream or read your favorite book.

Step 3. Make a game of cleaning your room if you could use some extra motivation

If it's hard for you to motivate yourself to clean your room, make the job interesting by playing a game. See how many things you can clear in ten minutes and then try to beat your best score. Step 4. Make a checklist with all the tasks to keep track of what you have already done

A checklist is a great way to make you feel like you've accomplished something and made progress when you're clearing out a lot of clutter. Decide what you want to organize, tidy and clean, then prioritize the tasks, putting the highest priority task at the top and the lowest priority task at the bottom. Make your list as detailed as possible so that you don't forget anything.

Step 5. Divide the tasks over the week to make the process manageable

Get everything off your bed and pile it up in a corner of the room. Then put your blankets and sheets back on your bed and tuck them in, lay out your duvet neatly and place your pillows at the head of your bed.

If you haven't changed your bed in a while, put your linens in the laundry basket and make your bed with clean linens. Your bed will smell and feel extra fresh this way

Step 2. Arrange all the clothes on the floor

Pick up all the clothes and look at them one by one to see if they are dirty. When in doubt, put the garment with the dirty clothes. You can fold clean clothes and put them in your chest of drawers or hang them up in your wardrobe. You put dirty clothes in the laundry basket.

Tip:

Don't turn on the washing machine until you've finished cleaning up, because you never know where you'll find a dirty sock that also needs to be washed.

Step 3. Take all the dirty dishes to the kitchen

Put all your writing utensils in one box, your photos in another box, your cosmetics in another box, your craft supplies in another box and so on. This is a good way to give your room a personal touch. If you find a nice ornament or fun toy while you're cleaning up, give it a place on your desk, chest of drawers, or nightstand to serve as a decoration. Place only a few items on each surface so your room doesn't look cluttered.

Using places to display objects will keep your room tidier. Misplaced items will look out of place and you'll want to clear them up quickly. Surfaces with fewer objects are also easier to clean and dust

Step 1. Dust all surfaces in your room

Use a feather duster to dust off your desk, chest of drawers, bookshelves, blinds, fans, light switches, lamps and all other surfaces in your room. Always start at the top and work your way down so that dust and dirt don't end up on surfaces you've already cleaned. Dust before vacuuming or sweeping your room, as dust particles will often blow up and fall back onto the floor.

  • If you don't have a feather duster, use a microfiber cloth to wipe off the dust.
  • Be sure to dust the items on your desk, chest of drawers, and other surfaces as well. Picture frames, holiday souvenirs and trophies look a lot nicer when they're not covered in dust.

Sticky residue can attract ants and damage your furniture. Spray a little cleaner on the surfaces and wipe them with a cloth. A microfiber cloth is a good option, because it allows you to easily remove various types of dirt and stains. Wipe your desk, chest of drawers, nightstand, frames, baseboards, moldings and all other surfaces in your room at least once a week.

Disinfectant wipes also work well, as they kill any bacteria that may have grown on the surfaces in your room

Step 3. Vacuum the floor, especially under your bed and desk

These spots are often skipped when cleaning a room quickly, so be sure to vacuum them thoroughly. Move your furniture if necessary to make it easier to vacuum the areas underneath. Push the vacuum cleaner back and forth across the entire floor until the carpet is spotless.

  • If the vacuum cleaner does not have much suction power, see if the vacuum cleaner bag or container is full and replace the bag or empty the container if necessary.
  • Vacuum your floor at least once a week. Do this more often if you wear shoes indoors.

Tip:

If your carpet smells strange, sprinkle a little carpet refresher or baking soda on it before vacuuming to keep your room smelling fresh.

Step 4. Sweep and mop the floor, if necessary

  • Don't forget to clean the rails if you have sliding windows. Vacuum up loose debris between the rails with a vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool or a handheld vacuum. You can use an old toothbrush and a bit of all-purpose cleaner to scrub away built-in dirt and dust.

Step 6. Wipe light knobs and door handles with a disinfectant spray

These are the surfaces in your room that are touched the most. This means that a lot of bacteria will accumulate on it over time. Spray the light switches and door handles with a household disinfectant spray, then wipe the surfaces with a cloth or paper towel.

  • Disinfect the door handles and light knobs once a week to keep them fresh and clean.
  • Also remove wall sockets. They are touched less often than light switches and so are less likely to get dirty, but keeping them clean and tidy will make your whole room look better.
